Utility work for an adjacent development project will close the Broadway Bikeway and the adjacent sidewalk between Pike and Pine Streets June 2 through 15. It's just one block, but due the streetcar tracks in the roadway make it impossible to provide a proper detour.

Please be careful and consider using a different street (streets one bock in either direction will work) because the tracks can be extremely dangerous, especially on a hill like the one between Pike and Pine. Bike tires can slip either entirely or partially into the track flange, sending riders over the handlebars with little to no warning.

SDOT and the contractor should make extra sure to communicate a safe way for people biking to get around the closure as well as the hazard of biking on the tracks. Longtime readers of this blog are well aware of track dangers, but many new riders may not know to avoid them. They look innocent enough, until they grab your tire.

The easiest detour option happens to be Pride themed: The rainbow detour! Bike across four rainbow crosswalks at Broadway/Pine, Pine/10th, 10th/Pike, and Pike/Broadway to get back on Broadway Bikeway. See map above.

More details from SDOT:

We want to tell you about temporary construction affecting the sidewalk and bike lane on Broadway that will affect how people get around.

We've approved a request by a contractor working on an affordable housing project to close the bike lane and the sidewalk on the east side of Broadway between Pike St and Pine St from June 2 to June 15, 2025. The bike lane will be closed 24-hours a day, and the sidewalk will be closed between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily.

The contractor working on the nearby affordable housing project needs these closures so they can expand Seattle City Light's underground infrastructure safely.

Because of the streetcar tracks on Broadway, if you are biking or scooting you will need to either:

  • Cross the street and walk your bike or scooter for one block on sidewalk on the west side of Broadway.
  • Use a different route such as 12th Ave E and Melrose Ave to get between Pike St and Pine St.

We're sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience. When the work is done, the contractor will reopen the bike lane and sidewalk for you to use.
