The bicycle is one of the most versatile vehicles in the world because it runs efficiently on an extremely wide variety of fuel types. Beer, burritos, candy bars. Among the most common choices, however, are bagels and donuts. The nation's top scientists believe the wheel-like shapes of bagels and donuts offer a bicycle rider's body less resistance, equivalent to the speed benefits riders gain from attaching funny stickers to their bike frames.

However, a terrible conflict has broken out between zealous followers of the two wheel-like breakfast foods, and Seattle's bike riders will be forced to choose a side Saturday. It's lox vs glazed, sprinkle vs schmear. The only sure outcome is that there will be no corners.

The Urbanist, a pro-city extremist organization, is hosting a bicycle tour of six Seattle bagel shops: Mt Bagel, Oxbow, Hey Bagel, Toasted, Old Salt, and Backyard Bagel. Meet 10 a.m. Saturday (May 31) outside Chophouse Row on Capitol Hill. The group ride is sponsored by Wombi and is advertised as beginner friendly. Register for free in advance (donations encouraged to help pay for the bagels).

Meanwhile, Mighty-O Donuts, a shop that prides itself on proving that you don't need animal products to create unholy fried dough delicacies, is back with their annual Tour de Donut. The self-guided ride departs the Ballard Mighty-O (17th and Market) at 9:30 a.m. and hits up three other Mighty-O locations around the city before returning to Ballard. Your entry fee gets you a full-size donut and coffee at one location as well as mini donuts at all the others to keep your engine running in top form. Register in advance. Tickets are reduced to $27 now since it is too late to get a t-shirt.
