NFL training camp starts this month, which means players around the league are getting their last bits of offseason work in before the real work of trying to make the roster begins.

For certain players, this season is what some may call "Make or Break," meaning they need to put together a productive year or they could be looking for employment elsewhere at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

We'll highlight some of those players for the Jets, continuing today with running backBreece Hall.

2024 Stats

16 games started
876 rushing yards, five rushing touchdowns
57 catches, 483 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns

Why Make or Break?

Hall has been one of the Jets' most impactful offensive weapons throughout his three years in the league, leading the team in total touchdowns each year and being one of their top weapons in the passing game in addition to their leading rusher.

Despite this, there's still a sentiment that Hall has underachieved and needs to produce more to justify his standing as a top 40 draft choice -- and the salary he'll be seeking when his contract expires at the end of the upcoming season.

Hall is yet to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and the team's success has generally been closely tied to how productive he is. In 2024, he rushed for under 55 yards nine times, and the team won just two of those games.

Can Hall improve his consistency and overall production to the point where the Jets will be prepared to sign him to a lucrative long-term extension, or will he be seeking a fresh start in 2026?

What will break it?

Many believe Hall could produce less with Justin Fields at the helm. Fields' running ability could add another dimension to the Jets' offense and might even lead to more wins. However, if that means Hall is less involved in the passing game and gets fewer red zone touches, then it might be harder to justify giving him a big money extension.

It will also be important for Hall to be healthy throughout the season. After suffering a torn ACL in 2022 and spending much of 2023 getting back up to full speed, Hall was healthy at the start of the 2024 season, but recently admitted he was bothered more than he let on by another knee injury for much of the year. That may have been a major factor in his career-worst 4.2 yards per carry.

Head coach Aaron Glenn has already indicated that New York will use 2024 draft picks Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis more in 2025. So if either of them steps up, that could also eat into Hall's workload and have the Jets rethinking how best to get value for money at the position.

What will make it?

Aaron Rodgers was critical of the Jets' running game in 2024, more in terms of the strategic approach than the personnel or execution. With Nathaniel Hackett as the offensive coordinator, Todd Downing calling plays, and Keith Carter as the running game coordinator this no doubt over-complicated matters.

Tanner Engstrand takes over as the offensive coordinator and play caller, while the 2025 Jets don't have a separate running game coordinator -- so the framework is in place for there to be a much more cohesive plan.

In addition to bringing more consistent production in 2025, Hall needs to cut back on some of the mistakes that crept into his game last season as he dropped eight passes and fumbled six times. He also needs to address one of former head coach Robert Saleh's criticisms from the past few seasons and become more reliable at gaining the tough yards.
