Colts' Adonai Mitchell drops TD before crossing goal line, ruining impressive catch-and-run score
Adonai Mitchell will want this one back, and the Indianapolis Colts can only hope they don't ultimately need it back.
In the third quarter against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Colts wide receiver wrestled a 50-50 ball down the left sideline away from Emmanuel Forbes Jr., then spun away and beat Forbes and Cam Kurl in a footrace to the end zone for a touchdown.
... Except Mitchell lost control of the ball right before crossing into the end zone:
Ball is out before it crosses the goal line. It's a touchback!

It looked like Mitchell was extending the ball to make sure it crossed the goal line as soon as possible, rather than some absent-minded celebratory drop we've seen hurt teams before.
Like ... the Colts! Star running back Jonathan Taylor let the ball go right before the goal line against the Denver Broncos in December of last season. That score would have given the Colts a 13-point lead with an extra point, and they went on to lose that game.
Mitchell's touchdown would have given the Colts a 17-13 lead with an extra point. They later took it anyway on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Jones to Michael Pittman Jr. We'll see if they can hold on.
