Justin Fields overcomes adversity-filled week, leads Jets to first win of season
Justin Fields was honest talking to reporters postgame.
This week was a lot for the young quarterback.
He found himself on the floor crying in his closet at one point.
Fields was mentioned Jets owner Woody Johnson amid the offensive struggles and 0-7 start to the season, and Fields faced uncertainty over his hold on the starting job.
Tyrod Taylor split first-team reps with him all week and was expected to receive the start, but a bone bruise in his knee didn't heal as hoped and kept him from making the trip to Cincy.
So, Gang Green turned to Fields one more time -- and, boy, did he deliver.
Fields proved to be extremely clutch, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown while also scrambling for 31 more yards to help Gang Green pull out a come-from-behind first win of the season.
Gang Green's 39 point were the most they scored this season.
He's primed to be able to handle situations like this," Aaron Glenn said.
Things were really clicking for him," the head coach added. He had a great week of practice, he knew what the situation was with him and Tyrod at the beginning of the week and neither one of those guys blinked. Between the walkthroughs and practice he had enough reps to go out there and compete the way we wanted him to compete, so I'm proud of him."
Though there's been some talk of this being a revenge game" of sort for Fields, he isn't focusing on that.
I'm not really worried about what anyone that's not my teammates or my coaches has to say," the QB said. Whoever wants to deal with that can deal with that. my main focus is my teammates, myself as a person and a human-being, and just my relationship with God.
There was no redemption' or anything like that, all of that stuff is cool, I don't care about it."
