Giants reportedly expected to start Jameis Winston over Russell Wilson if Jaxson Dart can't play
The New York Giants are expected to start Jameis Winston over Russell Wilson in their Week 11 game against the Green Bay Packers if Jaxson Dart is unable to play, according to multiple reports.
New York's decision to elevate Winston to its No. 2 quarterback comes two days after the Giants fired Brian Daboll as head coach. Dart has remained in concussion protocol since being injured in the fourth quarter of New York's Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Wilson, who began the season as the Giants' starting quarterback, replaced Dart after he was injured against Chicago. Winston has not previously started for the Giants this season.
Dart had helped stake the Giants to a 17-7 lead and was driving for another potential score when he was injured. Bears quarterback Caleb Wilson led Chicago to a 24-20 comeback victory after Dart left the game - a loss that dropped the Giants to 2-8 on the season.
Daboll was fired the following day and Mike Kafka was named interim coach.
Dart, who has been evaluated for concussions four times this season, has not yet been cleared to play against the Packers.
Winston, 31, won the Heisman Trophy with Florida State in 2013, becoming the first freshman to win the award and lead his team to a national title.
Winston is in his 10th NFL season and posted a 36-51 record as a starter with Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Cleveland before joining the Giants during the offseason.
His most high-profile NFL season came in 2019 with the Bucs when he passed for 33 touchdowns, 5,109 yards and 30 interceptions.
Wilson, a 14-year veteran and 10-time Pro Bowler, has largely been ineffective since Seattle traded him to Denver in 2022. He's compiled a 17-27 mark as a starter with the Broncos, Steelers and Giants, continuing to take sacks at a high level, avoiding risk and failing to utilize the entire field.
