Jets benching Justin Fields, turning to Tyrod Taylor as starting quarterback
The Jets are making a change at quarterback ahead of their matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, benchingJustin Fields in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor, SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes confirms.
An offseason signing by general manager Darren Mougey, Fields has struggled during his first season in New York. While he's accounted for 11 total touchdowns and thrown just one interception, the Jets' passing game has been grounded for much of the year with Fields at the helm.
Fields has thrown for fewer than 55 yards in four of his nine starts this season, and the Jets have gone 2-7 with him leading the offense.
Fields was benched at halftime during New York's Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers, and it looked like Aaron Glenn and the rest of the coaching staff was ready to make that change permanent. But Taylor was ruled out with a knee injury for the following game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Fields responded with his best start of the year, throwing for 244 yards in a 39-38 Jets win.
After two more subpar performances, Fields has now been benched once again, with the Jets turning back to Taylor.
In three games this season, Taylor has thrown for 379 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. And while he has turned the ball over more than Fields despite far less playing time, Taylor has demonstrated more of a willingness to push the ball downfield for potential explosive plays.
Taylor, a 15-year NFL vet, has a career record of 28-29-1 as a starter, completing 61.9 percent of his passes for 12,633 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions.
