Aaron Glenn confident Jets rookie Brady Cook will ‘be a quarterback in this league’
Brady Cook is moving up the Jets' depth chart.
Cook is lined up to serve as Gang Green's backup behind Tyrod Taylor with Justin Fields officially set to miss this Sunday's contest against the Dolphins with a knee issue that flared up in practice.
It's exciting," Cook said. Obviously, from a personal level, you're always looking for that next opportunity and this is mine -- to back up Tyrod this week, it's a pleasure, I'm excited."
This will be the youngster's third practice squad elevation this season.
While he has yet to see the field during his pro career, head coach Aaron Glenn likes what he's seen from Cook in practice and he's confident he has a future in the NFL.
He's improving," Glenn said. The one thing we do quite a bit in practice is we have a number of competition periods, and you see exactly how this guy goes about his business when his time comes -- he looks forward to it.
He always asks when those opportunities are gonna come for him, and we make sure to give him those reps; he's a very competitive guy -- I can't tell you when, but he'll be a quarterback in this league, I do know that."
Cook certainly showed flashes of that potential during his college career, completing 66 percent of his passes for 9,251 yards and 50 touchdowns in five years at Missouri.
Despite that, the 24-year-old ended up getting passed by in this year's draft.
He landed in the Big Apple as an undrafted free agent, and he impressed enough during training camp and preseason action to land a spot on the practice squad.
Watching behind Fields and Taylor to this point, Cooks feels he's grown as a QB.
I've seen big jumps," he said. You get here and it feels like a lot is thrown at you, but as the weeks go by, as you watch how Tyrod and Justin go about their business and just handle everything -- it's becoming a lot smoother."
With New York sitting at 2-10, perhaps Cook may see some snaps down the stretch.
