Eagles snap counts: Vic Fangio finds a small role for Jihaad Campbell
Eagles snap counts: Vic Fangio finds a small role for Jihaad Campbell originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
It wasn't a ton of work but Vic Fangio kept his word. He did find some snaps for first-round rookie Jihaad Campbell on Monday night.
Campbell played 9 of 74 snaps (12%) against the Chargers after he didn't get on the field in Week 13 against the Bears. During the week, Fangio said he should have gotten Campbell some snaps and would try to going forward.
Here's how the linebacker snaps broke down in the 22-19 overtime loss to the Chargers:
Zack Baun: 74 snaps (100%)
Nakobe Dean: 65 snaps (88%)
Jihaad Campbell: 12 snaps (12%)
While Dean was caught a little flat-footed on a 60-yard pass to the running back early in the game, he ended up having another big performance with 7 tackles, 1 sack, 2 QB hits and a forced fumble. It's not hard to figure out why Fangio doesn't want to take him off the field.
But Campbell played well in his limited role. He played just 12 snaps but had 2 solo tackles.
Other defensive notes
Even though the Eagles' defense played well against the Chargers, they were on the field a ton again, although this time they did play in OT. Over the last three weeks, they have played 74 snaps, 87 snaps and 74 snaps. Those are three of their four highest totals this season (they also played 74 snaps against the Broncos). The Chargers won the time-of-possession battle 38:05-29:26.
Baun, Cooper DeJean, Reed Blankenship and Quinyon Mitchell did not leave the field, playing all 74 snaps.
Marcus Epps made his first start of the season and played 72 of 74 snaps. He had played just 15 defensive snaps all season before this game. Epps had three tackles.
The Eagles were without Jalen Carter, so here's how the DT rotation looked: Moro Ojomo - 57 snaps (77%), Jordan Davis - 45 snaps (61%), Byron Young - 32 snaps (43%), Ty Robinson - 7 snaps (9%). It's worth noting that the Eagles got snaps for Brandon Graham, Jaelan Phillips and even Jalyx Hunt lining up inside during this game.
Speaking of Graham, he played 30 snaps in this game. That's by far the most the 37-year-old has played in a game since coming out of retirement. He had played just 32 in his first four games back.
The edge rotation: Jaelan Phillips - 59 snaps (80%), Nolan Smith - 44 snaps (59%), Jalyx Hunt - 40 snaps (54%), Brandon Graham - 30 snaps (41%).
Offensive notes
Jalen Hurts and four of his offensive linemen played all 71 snaps. Landon Dickerson played 59 of 71. He left the game with a calf injury but was able to return. Brett Toth played the other 12 snaps at left guard.
At receiver, both A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith played 69 of 71 snaps. Brown had a big day statistically with 100 yards but had a few uncharacteristic drops that loomed large. After those two, Jahan Dotson played 35 snaps (49%) and Darius Cooper played 21 snaps (30%).
Saquon Barkley played 58 snaps (82%) and went over 100 yards for just the second time all season. He had a 52-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley each played 7 snaps.
Dallas Goedert played 66 of 71 snaps (93%) and had one of his better games of the season. Goedert had 8 catches on 10 targets for 78 yards. Grant Calcaterra played 15 snaps (21%), Cam Latu played 5 and Kylen Granson played 2.
Cooper DeJean did get one offensive snap. He was on the field as the deep man when Hurts took the knee to send the game into overtime.
