Jets will place franchise tag on running back Breece Hall

The Jets are going to use the franchise tag on Breece Hall per Connor Hughes.

The two sides were working towards an extension, but couldn't quite get there. The Jets expect him to play on the tag.

This is not a surprise. Jets general manager Darren Mougey said just a few days ago that the Jets would tag Hall if the team could not work out a long-term extension for the running back by today's deadline.

There were two questions. The first was whether the two sides could work out a deal in advance. The answer to that is clearly no. The second question was whether the Jets would use the franchise tag or the transition tag. The transition tag was just about $3 million cheaper but came with far fewer protections. On the transition tag, Hall would be able to seek offers from new teams. The Jets would have the right to match any offer sheet Breece signed with a new team, but they would get no compensation if they chose not to match. For all intents and purposes, the franchise tag keeps Hall a Jets for another year barring a trade. Because of how much stronger the franchise tag protections are, it is almost always the preferred choice for teams. The transition tag is rarely used. It isn't entirely clear why the Jets were considering using the transition tag, but they wisely used the stronger tool at their disposal.

The franchise tag sets Hall's salary at $14.293 million for 2026. The Jets and he can continue to try and reach a long-term deal, which could bring his cap number down for this season.
