The Pittsburgh Steelers added another dynamic piece to their backfield this offseason when they signed running back Rico Dowdle, and the new Pittsburgh running back is making it clear he's arriving motivated and with purpose.

In a recent sit-down with Missi Matthews of Pittsburgh Steelers media, Dowdle opened up about why Pittsburgh felt like the right fit - and why he still plays with something to prove.

A big reason? Familiarity and trust in head coach Mike McCarthy.

He was definitely one of the main reasons why I chose here," Dowdle said. Opportunity and Mike McCarthy definitely played a big factor."

Dowdle didn't hesitate when asked what stands out about McCarthy's leadership style.

He's a players coach. He helped me get my body to my best form."

The Steelers are expected to lean on a revamped rushing attack, with Dowdle pairing alongside fellow undrafted grinder Jaylen Warren. It's a duo built on perseverance - something Dowdle takes pride in.

For a guy like me I always had to fight for my spot."

That mentality has defined his journey to this point, and it continues to fuel him as he steps into a larger role in Pittsburgh.

One of the more intriguing aspects of Dowdle's background is his experience at quarterback in high school - a detail that still shapes how he sees the field today.

It helped me understand defenses better. Seeing defense from a QB perspective," Dowdle explained. I've been the emergency QB for the Cowboys and Panthers on game days."

That added football IQ could prove valuable in a Steelers offense looking for versatility and adaptability.

Dowdle now steps into an opportunity to anchor the backfield and build on his recent production, with hopes of not only maintaining consistency but also elevating the unit after the departure of Kenneth Gainwell.

If his words are any indication, the Steelers aren't just getting a running back - they're getting a player still hungry to prove he belongs.
