The Seattle Seahawks have livened up the quietest part of the NFL offseason with a trade centered around special teams.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported on Wednesday that the Seahawks have given up a conditional seventh-round pick for New York Jets wide receiver Irvin Charles.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports that the conditional seventh-rounder is a 2028 pick.

The Seahawks made the trade official and let go for UDFA rookie receiver Trayvon Rudolph in a corresponding move.

Charles might be listed as a wide receiver, but he has never caught an NFL pass or even been targeted in any of his 53 career snaps on offense. His main role is special teams gunner, having joined the Jets in 2022. Unfortunately, Charles tore his ACL at the end of the 2024 season and missed all of 2025 as a result, so he hasn't played any football for awhile. When healthy, Charles has recorded 14 special teams tackles and a blocked punt.

The 29-year-old Charles is a somewhat unique story in that his college career began a decade ago, but he was ultimately kicked off the Penn State team for violating team rules. Charles returned to college in 2021, catching 39 passes for nearly 800 yards and 12 touchdowns for Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

This trade seems as simple as adding competition for the special teams gunner spot left vacant after Dareke Young joined the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
