Chiefs 'moving forward just normal' amid Rashee Rice uncertainty, Andy Reid says

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters May 28 for the first time since Rashee Rice was arrested and sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating the terms of his probation.

Reid began his media availability by stating that the Chiefs were "aware of the situation" and had been in contact with the NFL about it.

Then, Reid opined that Rice needs to "make sure he gets it" and learn from his mistakes as he attempts to return to the Chiefs.

"It's not an easy thing he's going through," Reid said. "Life lessons are important, but we're all given chances to learn. So, he's in that position now."

In 2025, Rice was sentenced to a deferred, 30-day jail stay and five years of probation after pleading guilty to two third-degree felony charges - collision involving serious bodily injury, and racing on a highway causing bodily injury - stemming from an incident on a Dallas-area highway on March 30, 2024.

Rice was able to avoid the flexible, 30-day prison sentence before testing positive for THC - one of the main active components found in marijuana - which violated his probation. He was placed into custody on May 19, according to court documents, and will be eligible for release on June 16.

Despite Rice's legal issues, Reid doesn't seem to believe the young receiver will face another suspension stemming from his most recent arrest.

"There's been no talk about anything further," Reid told reporters of further discipline for Rice. "We're moving forward just normal as we go here. When he gets back, we gotta get him caught up and doing what he needs to do."

Will Rashee Rice be suspended?

Reid made it seem like the NFL was not considering additional punishment for Rice. That said, the league hasn't indicated whether it is considering suspending the wide receiver in wake of his latest legal trouble.

"We are aware of the report and will decline further comment at this time," a league spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports in a statement shortly after Rice's arrest.

While it isn't clear whether the NFL will suspend Rice, the league could consider disciplining him under two of its policies.

The first would be the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse, which includes THC - which is also listed as marijuana - as one of the nine substances tested for as part of the "NFL Drug Panel."

The primary punishment listed within the policy is to fine players who test positive for substances of abuse. However, there is a section that outlines suspension as an option for players committing a "violation of law ... relating to use, possession, acquisition, sale, or distribution of Substances of Abuse other than alcohol."

"Deferred adjudication" is listed as one of the contexts for which the NFL would consider such discipline, so Rice could be subject to a suspension of up to four games - "absent aggravating circumstances" - as a first-time offender.

Rice could also be subject to discipline under the NFL's personal conduct policy. That policy outlines "illegal possession, use, or distribution of alcohol or drugs" as conduct prohibited by the NFL, which would potentially give the league grounds to punish Rice.

The NFL's personal conduct policy does not outline specific suspension length for drug-related offenses. The overarching guidelines on punishment under the policy simply read as follows:

"Depending on the nature of the violation and the player's record, discipline may be a fine, a suspension for a fixed or an indefinite period of time, a combination of the two, or banishment from the league with an opportunity to reapply."

It's worth noting Rice would be a repeat offender if disciplined under the NFL's personal conduct policy. He served a six-game suspension at the start of the 2025 season due to his initial arrest.

But at present, it remains unclear whether the NFL will consider dealing Rice another suspension.

Rashee Rice stats

Rice was limited to eight games in 2025 because of a six-game suspension to start the season as well as a late-year concussion. Below is a look at the numbers he posted across his limited action.

  • Games: 6
  • Targets: 78
  • Receptions: 53
  • Receiving yards: 571
  • Receiving TDs: 5
  • Yards per reception: 10.8
  • Passer rating when targeted: 106.6

Rice figures to be an important part of the Chiefs' offense in 2026. He profiles as the team's No. 1 receiving target, as his savvy route-running skills and strong short-to-intermediate-area skill set will provide Patrick Mahomes a reliable target as he returns from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.

Of course, that's all provided that Rice can stay on the field and avoid a potential suspension for his latest legal transgression.
