What to know about Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers tension amid cryptic posts

Brandon Aiyuk currently remains a member of the San Francisco 49ers despite the organization communicating at the end of the 2025 season they would likely be parting ways during the offseason.

Aiyuk is making it known he isn't happy with that arrangement.

On June 6, Aiyuk posted a picture of himself wearing a Washington Commanders hat to his Instagram story.

The following day, Aiyuk posted a cryptic, minute-and-a-half-long video to his account. He didn't mention the 49ers by name in his video but seemingly alluded to the acrimonious split under which he and the franchise are currently going.

"The truth is, they're scared," Aiyuk said. "They're scared. They know how I get. They're gonna say, 'Oh yeah, BA did this. BA did that.' You know that (expletive). Allegedly. Allegedly. But what they're not gonna say is, 'BA sucks at football,' because they know how I get."

"Man, stop running from the belt," Aiyuk added. "The belt coming."

The 49ers haven't yet responded to Aiyuk's latest antics, and it isn't clear whether they will. What is becoming clearer is that the 28-year-old receiver wants out of San Francisco and may try to take matters into his own hands as his stalemate with the team continues into the summer months.

Here's what to know about Aiyuk's relationship with the 49ers and his connection to the Commanders as he seeks a fresh start.

Brandon Aiyuk's relationship with 49ers

The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers deteriorated during the 2025 NFL season.

Aiyuk spent the early part of the season recovering from a torn ACL and MCL he suffered in Week 7 of the 2024 campaign. He was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start the year, and he was expected to have a chance to return in the second half of the season.

Instead, communication between the 49ers and Aiyuk broke down at some point during the campaign. The receiver "stopped answering anyone's phone calls, including the head coach's," as Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported, and the 49ers eventually voided remaining guarantees in the veteran's contract because of his absence.

"That's something I'd never seen in 22 years of coaching," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of the situation.

Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch did not mince words when asked about Aiyuk's future with the team during San Francisco's end-of-season news conference.

"I think it's safe to say he's played his last snap with the 49ers," Lynch told reporters on Jan. 21.

The 49ers have held onto the 28-year-old and are hoping a team will come calling to acquire the disgruntled pass-catcher in a trade.

"We're available. Give us a call," Lynch said of Aiyuk on April 26 following the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft. "And like I said earlier, I think it's the prudent thing to do. He's an extremely talented player. He's been an extremely effective player in our league; situation didn't work itself out here. That's not to say that it can't be rekindled somewhere else. And we'd be happy to do something with anyone if the opportunity presented itself."

Lynch was also asked whether the 49ers would consider releasing Aiyuk if they couldn't find a willing trade partner for the 2020 first-round pick.

"Not anytime soon," he said.

It isn't yet clear whether Aiyuk's latest messages will accelerate his likely departure from the 49ers.

Brandon Aiyuk's Commanders connections

When the 49ers eventually move on from Aiyuk, the expectation is the Commanders will be one of his top landing spots - a fact the wide-out alluded to with his Instagram post.

The Commanders have several notable connections to the 28-year-old receiver. General manager Adam Peters worked in San Francisco's front office from 2017 to 2023 and was the team's vice president of player personnel when the 49ers selected Aiyuk in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Additionally, Aiyuk overlapped with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels during his final season at Arizona State. Aiyuk served as Daniels' No. 1 target and posted 65 catches for 1,192 yards and eight touchdowns while showing good chemistry with the then-true freshman quarterback.

Aiyuk's pre-existing relationship with Daniels would likely allow him to hit the ground running in Washington - even as he prepares to return from a year-and-a-half absence. The 28-year-old would also fill a big need for the Commanders, as Washington is still searching for an established, No. 2 receiver across from Terry McLaurin.

As such, the Commanders are likely the top team to watch if the 49ers do eventually release Aiyuk.

Brandon Aiyuk landing spots

If Aiyuk doesn't land with the Commanders, several other teams could have an interest in the veteran's services. None would be likely to trade for him, but all could consider signing him if the 49ers eventually cut their losses and end their partnership with Aiyuk.

Below are Aiyuk's best potential non-Washington fits.

Las Vegas Raiders

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak spent the 2023 season as San Francisco's passing game coordinator. Aiyuk posted 75 catches for a career-best 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns during the season and made the NFL's All-Pro second team.

That, plus Las Vegas' need for a No. 1 receiver to pair with Fernando Mendoza, could convince the team to chase Aiyuk on the open market.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans have spent a lot of resources building around Cam Ward this offseason. They signed Wan'Dale Robinson to a big-money free agent deal and spent the No. 4 overall pick on Ohio State's Carnell Tate to give Ward a couple of high-end weapons.

Still, the Titans could consider adding Aiyuk to help ease Tate's transition into the NFL and compete with fellow veteran Calvin Ridley for playing time. Tennessee coach Robert Saleh overlapped with Aiyuk during both the 2020 and 2025 seasons, so perhaps their familiarity could blossom into a partnership.

Kansas City Chiefs

Andy Reid has a penchant for giving players second chances, so it's easy to imagine him being drawn to Aiyuk should the 28-year-old become a free agent.

The Chiefs lost Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency while Rashee Rice is again dealing with legal trouble. Aiyuk could provide some insurance for Rice - who has played just 12 games over the last two seasons due to injury and suspension - and give Patrick Mahomes another reliable target.

Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles already has one of the NFL's best receiver duos in Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. That said, the Rams are making an all-in push as they look to win another Super Bowl with 38-year-old Matthew Stafford, so they could consider adding a better No. 3 receiver to join the duo.

Aiyuk may desire a larger role than what Los Angeles could offer him. At the same time, he might be happy to be afforded an opportunity play the 49ers twice a year while playing on a legitimate Super Bowl contender. If that emerges as his No. 1 priority, the Rams could end up being a sneaky-good fit.
