Samsung's UFS 5.0 sets the tone for snappy AI on phones, aims for Q4 production
- Samsung announced UFS 5.0 storage, stating it has achieved up to 9.5 GB/s writing and up to 10.8 GB/s reading speeds.
- The company states UFS 5.0's power efficiency rose by 40% compared to the 4.1 solution, and it's 16.7% smaller.
- Samsung also states UFS 5.0 upgrades on-device AI, providing quicker response times and lower latency, and it intends to enter mass production by Q4 2026.
The next generation of phone storage is on the way. Samsung announced the "fastest" solution for mobile phones, which means its next Galaxy series could get it.
This week, Samsung announced the UFS 5.0 storage solution for mobile devices. The latest memory standard can reportedly achieve "up to 10.8 gigabytes per second" (reading speed). The company adds that its development pushes UFS 5.0's writing speeds up to 9.5 GB/s. Samsung touts that its 5.0 solution is roughly "twice as fast" as the UFS 4.1 storage, which you'd find in the OnePlus 15.
Power efficiency has shot up with UFS 5.0 by "more than" 40%. What's more, Samsung was able to minimize its storage by ~16.7%, meaning thin phones aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Samsung states this advancement is not only a boon for phones, but smaller storage solutions mean better applications in wearables and XR devices.
While this aims to benefit phones and more, Samsung is eyeing another key aspect of mobile devices nowadays: AI. UFS 5.0 is said to facilitate "much faster storage and processing of large data" for on-device AI. Reduced latency and quicker response times from LLMs (large language models) will see improvements, too. With the announcement in June, Samsung states it aims to enter mass production of UFS 5.0 storage in Q4 2026. It will produce this in various sizes, up to 1TB of storage.
Much like its application outlook, Samsung intends for UFS 5.0 to be used in flagship phones, hoping to meet next-gen demand/growth.
Everybody loves good storage
The announcement and Samsung's intentions for UFS 5.0 are interesting when you think back to those Galaxy S27 rumors. Mid-April reports claimed Samsung was shifting its mindset, moving to integrate UFS 5.0 into the Galaxy S27 series. However, while intriguing (and interesting now after the full reveal), the upgrade might not enhance the entire series. Apparently, UFS 5.0 will only arrive for "some"of Samsung's S27 series.
It's still unclear which devices would see it, but we're at least expecting the S27 Ultra to have it. Samsung states in its post that it plans to mass-produce UFS 5.0 late this year, but pricing is still a concern (per the rumors). We've seen how the phone market's been trending. Samsung reportedly has a lot to consider before applying this solution to its next phones.
Android Central's TakeReading and writing speeds for a hard drive are crucial when it comes to computers. I never want my PC lagging behind during a download or while transferring files. It's the same sentiment when it comes to phones. Why get an expensive phone if it's lacking in its storage solution? If it's slow and takes too long for basic processes? This upgrade is double whammy, as Samsung's not only quickening its memory usefulness, impacting apps and more, but it also helps AI (more Galaxy AI anyone?).
