NFL players with the most on the line in 2026: One from every team

Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels, QB

The real answer is head coach Dan Quinn, who has turned to two first-year coordinators when his future in Washington may depend on a winning season. But this is a players-only list, and although this player is only a year removed from being the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year, he inherently faces the most pressure on Washington's roster. The Commanders haven't wavered in their belief in Daniels, and he's given them little reason to do so. But should he have another injury-riddled season or look wholly unlike the player he was in 2024, there undoubtedly will be comparisons to Robert Griffin III or questions about whether he's the franchise's long-term answer at QB. But another solid season from Daniels, and especially one with a playoff berth, would reaffirm his place among the league's top QBs and all but guarantee him a massive second contract. Biggest Training Camp Question: How do Harris& MartinFit?

Harris arrived with positional versatility that could matter with experience at both safety spots and cornerback, though he struggled mightily at free safety after missing at least 10% of his tackles for the third straight season while allowing completions on 60% of targets. A fractured fibula would then end his first season as a Commander after appearing in just nine games, giving him a chance to prove himself once again along the backline.

Similar could be said for Martin, who started all but one of Washington's 17 games in 2025, his third season with the organization, despite battling consistent injuries. His ten missed tackles marked a career-high, yet so did his 154.5 passer rating allowed when targeted - comfortably surpassing the 86.4 rating he allowed as a rookie in 2023. Though he's amassed four forced fumbles and six pass deflections over the last two seasons, 2025 marked his first season without an interception. Now under a coordinator that has made clear takeaways are a priority, Martin has a chance to prove 2025 was an outlier. Did being less than 100% all season play a role? 2026 can prove that.

Martin adds IQ to the backline, but with Jones implementing three safety looks, could Martin also be used in nickel packages with Amik Robertson? The former second round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft will need to showcase that - and consistently.

Six Commanders players who could force tough roster decisions

Chris Hilton Jr. - Commanders WR

Much has been made about the Commanders' concerns in their wide receiver room. Speculation remains high about another dependable veteran coming into the fold, but Adam Peters might also decide to stick with what he has and hope one or two of the young hopefuls can break out.

That's risky, but it does have some merit. The competition for places will make everyone better, and though Chris Hilton Jr. has a huge fight to stay relevant, he's got the athletic scope to enter the roster conversation with a strong camp and preseason.

Hilton has a previously established connection with Jayden Daniels from their time together at LSU. His production with the Tigers was modest, which is why he didn't hear his name called during the 2026 NFL Draft. At the same time, there is also a lot of untapped potential if he can become a more convincing route runner.

NFL All-Backup Team: Could a roster of bench players contend?

Washington Commanders

G/OT Andrew Wylie,LB Leo Chenal[Bill-in-Bangkok: Leo Chenal as a backup is a tough sell]

Two former Chiefs make it to our team of backups. Wylie is an ideal sixth lineman, a utility player with significant starting experience at guard and tackle. He could start at either right guard or right tackle in a pinch. Chenal will play in base defense for the Commanders, but when they're in their nickel package, he'll likely come off the field with Frankie Luvu and Sonny Styles staying on. Chenal was excellent for the Chiefs in their second Super Bowl victory over the 49ers and offers our team sound tackling and some meaningful thump against the run.

Miami Dolphins

K Zane Gonzalez

Let's get the kicker off the board! The Dolphins are one of the few teams with two veteran kickers on their roster, so Gonzalez is an easy pick for us after hitting 86.4% of his attempts last season in Atlanta.

Green Bay Packers

CB Benjamin St-Juste

The Packers are usually a reliable source for talented depth, but this year, we're going for one of their free agent additions on a low-cost contract. St-Juste was a promising cornerback in Washington before falling out of the starting lineup in 2024. The Canadian wisely chose to join the Chargers last offseason, where he was one of the many defensive backs to revitalize their careers under Jesse Minter, allowing a 68.3 passer rating in coverage across 356 snaps.

Atlanta Falcons

WR Olamide Zaccheaus

Zaccheaus is an ideal third wide receiver. Yes, 2025 wasn't his most productive season in terms of yardage, but the well-traveled veteran is one of the league's best blocking wide receivers and is effective just enough as a pass catcher to justify staying on the field. With the Falcons likely living in 12 personnel in 2026, Zaccheaus will be playing behind Jahan Dotson across from Drake London this season. Don't be surprised if he is moved ahead of Dotson by the time the season ends.

THERE ARE TWO kinds of slipper wearers in the NFL. Those who wear normal slippers and those who ... don't.

Washington Commanders defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste is definitely among the latter, because his latest choice was a pair of purple bear claw mules, which he purchased last season for $115 from Bravest Studios.

My first pair was brown, like a grizzly bear," explains Jean-Baptiste, who said he ordered a pair of blue bear claw mules last season for teammate Dante Fowler Jr. Then I saw the purple, and it's my favorite color, so I got that. ... They're comfortable."

When I asked him, Are you healthy?" He said, We're going to be healthy and we're going to be good for training camp," which, again, starts in 10 days.

So, this is not like a long-term projection thing. Either he's feeling healthy or he's not. And he said that he is.

If Dan Quinn says, Trey, we're going to ease you back into it; you're not a full participant, but you will be out here doing some drills," that's one thing. So, I'm not guaranteeing that he will be a full participant. I'm not guaranteeing that he'll be playing in joint practices and stuff like that. But, from the horse's mouth itself, he is healthy. This is huge because Trey did not practice with the team during OTAAS and during mini camp.

Why 2025 NFC East standings are a bad predictor of 2026 standings

Long before analytics became mainstream, baseball writer Bill James proposed six indicators that tended to predict whether teams would improve or decline from one season to the next. The indicators were designed for baseball, not football, but the underlying ideas apply remarkably well to the NFL.

Some of these indicators are stronger than others. None should be treated as definitive. The NFL is an unusually noisy sport. Teams play only 17 games. Injuries swing seasons. One tipped interception can change a division race. That means even the best statistical indicators should be viewed as tendencies rather than predictions.

Our goal today isn't to predict the 2026 standings. It's to identify the forces quietly pushing teams toward improvement, or regression, before the season begins.

Let's see what they say about the 2026 NFC East.

Point Differential

The Pythagorean Formula estimates how many games a team should have won based solely on points scored and points allowed. If a team wins significantly more games than expected, history suggests some regression is likely. If it wins fewer games than expected, improvement often follows.

Here's how the NFC East stacks up entering 2026:

The Eagles outperformed their expected wins; the Cowboys were about as expected. The Commanders and Giants finished with fewer wins than their point differential deserved, and are likely to improve, even without major roster changes.

This is one of the most reliable indicators we have, because point differential tends to be much more stable from year to year than win-loss record.

Close Games: Winning Every Coin Flip Isn't a Skill

One-score games have an outsized impact on NFL standings. The difference between a 12-win season and a 9-win season is often just a handful of plays spread across four or five close games. While elite teams may consistently put themselves in position to win late, the outcome of those games is surprisingly volatile from year to year.

Here's the NFC East record in games decided by seven points or fewer:

Teams that go 8-2 in one-score games rarely repeat that success. Teams that finish 2-8 usually improve, even if the roster stays largely the same. That doesn't mean close-game performance is meaningless. It means extreme close-game performance is difficult to sustain.

These two indicators are stronger together than they are separately. If a team outperformed its Pythagorean expectation and posted an exceptional record in close games, the case for regression becomes much stronger. If a team underperformed its expected wins and struggled in close games, the case for improvement becomes much stronger.

Why can't MetLife Stadium have grass for NFL games?

After the first two matches, The Athletic reported that:

With two matches played there, and six more to come including the final, the condition of the playing surface is already raising concerns. High-profile players such as Brazil star Vinicius Junior and France's Adrien Rabiot described the pitch as dry and difficult to play on, while Rabiot's coach Didier Deschamps said it was special". (He didn't mean it in a good way.)

Vinicious Junior said that:

Because of the weather and the heat, the grass dries out quickly and the game ends up being very slow. We can't build up a rhythm," the Real Madrid player told TNT Sports Brazil.

That makes things difficult because we want to play. We want to move the ball from one side to the other and this disrupts our game. But we have to adapt because I believe it will be like this all tournament.

France head coach Didier Deschamps and player Adrien Rabiot called the grass at MetLife Stadium a special surface - it's different."

We need to get used to this. There might be some cement below the grass. You have very short shards of grass here. But we do adjust. This does create a change, but we take these technicalities into account."

Rabiot shared a similar assessment. Well," he started, the pitch was... I don't know if I'd even call it that. It seemed more like an artificial pitch. It was hard and rigid, but it's like that for every team. You need to adapt to the conditions.

I hope we find better pitches in our other games."

It didn't pass the eye test either:

From the press box it appears a number of worn patches have developed on the MetLife Stadium pitch after just 1 game, so I went down to investigate.

If BC Place and others can do it, why not here? There are a couple of reasons. One is just the luck of the draw as far as weather goes. There are cool season and warm season grasses. For a tournament played in June and July in New Jersey, of course you'd plant a warm season (Bermuda) grass. Just one problem - Mother Nature didn't get the memo. May was not as consistently warm as expected, and the Bermuda grass didn't grow fast enough. Unlike BC Place, which used sod from a local grower, MetLife had to have sod trucked in on a 12-hour drive from North Carolina because the planned usage of a local New Jersey supplier was prevented by the Northeast's harsh winter.

There's another factor that is specific to MetLife, though, and this may be the death knell for the hopes of a permanent grass field. Here is the Met Life schedule starting August 1:

• Aug. 1-2: BTS (Korean boy band, in case like me you had to look them up)
• Aug 7-6: Chris Brown and Usher
• Aug. 12: Guns N' Roses
• Aug. 14: Jets - Tampa Bay preseason game
• Aug, 15: Giants - Vikings preseason game
• Aug, 21, 22, 25, 26: Bruno Mars
• Aug. 28: Jets - Giants preseason game
• Sept. 4-5: Ed Sheeran
• Sept. 11: BigBang (another Korean boy band)
• Sept. 13: Giants - Cowboys season opener
• Sept. 17-18: Karol G (Colombian singer, had to look her up, too)
• Sept. 20: Jets - Packers
• Sept. 25: AC/DC
• Sept. 25: Giants - Titans

You get the idea. For the next two months, MetLife is going to be packed with events, presumably with tons of people on the field. This, in addition to the cost, may be the real reason that the Giants and Jets are so resistant to going to grass.

Cam Skattebo doesn't care if people think he's brain-dead"

I mean, so I've been doing backflips since I was like four years old," Skattebo said. So it's natural to me. I'm gonna address the elephant. I will not hurt myself before the season. . . ."

He then explained his pratfall.

So what happened was, I don't know if you guys know WWE or not, those floors are bouncy," Skattebo said. So when I took off, I was mid-air, like, Holy cow, I'm not gonna land this, I'm way too high.' Landed, but it had too much cushion. It wasn't a stiff, firm ground. So that's why I kinda like went back, safely landed, got back up, was good to go. So nothing came out from that. I'm perfectly fine. Nothing happened. We're good."

I totally enjoy that part," Skattebo said. I think I less enjoy the brain-dead kind of guy.' But it is what it is. I mean, the New York people love it, so I'm just gonna keep being me. And if they wanna say I'm brain-dead and I don't have no brain, then who cares? Fuck it, you know?"

Back in March, Skattebo made waves by claiming that CTE, and asthma, aren't real. He later apologized for his tasteless joke."

Winning Super Bowl is what's left for' Dak Prescott: It's that or nothing'

[Dak Prescott admitted that] winning a Super Bowl truly is the lone conquest that remains.

Shoot yeah, that's what's left for me," Prescott told reporters on Friday. And that's always been my mindset, you know. That's the one thing I truly love about the Cowboys organization and the fanbase is it's that or nothing.

Those expectations follow the Cowboys annually, but they've been unfulfilled since the 1995 season when the Dallas dynasty headlined by Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin won its third Super Bowl in four years and the franchise's fifth overall.

Not only haven't the Cowboys won a Super Bowl since then, but they haven't advanced past the Divisional Round in that time span.

Currently, Dallas is on a two-season hiatus from the playoffs and hasn't won a postseason game since 2022 in the wild-card round.

Despite the recent struggles, Prescott answered in the affirmative that Super Bowl aspirations are more realistic in 2026.

Absolutely," he said. Obviously, each year you think that, but when you have last year as we did, the offense that we did, you make the changes and you've got a great defensive coordinator ... yeah, and us understanding what needs to be done."

He said that he loved being a Cowboys player and loved Cowboys nation because it's Super Bowl or bust."

Unfortunately, by that logic, Dallas has gone bust for 30 years.
