Bike-friendly endorsements for the 2026 Primary

Registered voters with up-to-date addresses should have received their 2026 primary ballots in the mail (or should receive one very soon). Below you will find a roundup of which candidates have earned endorsements from three respected organizations that care about bicycling and safe streets: The Transit Riders Union (TRU), the Urbanist (URB) and Washington Bikes (WB). The Urbanist has again gone above and beyond by explaining their reasoning behind each pick, so I highly recommend reading what they have to say if you want to better understand a certain item on this list. If an org did not list an endorsement, I also did not list them. But if an org specifically said No endorsement," then I did include that.

Many candidates received multiple endorsements, and there were very few splits. Only Ron Davis (Washington House District 46-1) and Nilu Jenks (Seattle City Council District 5) received all three endorsements uncontested. Rebecca Saldana (King County Council D 2) got close, but the Transit Riders Union also dual endorsed opponent Toshiko Grace Hasegawa.

In the Seattle area, the race with the most significant split is Washington Senate District 43. Both the Transit Riders Union and the Urbanist endorsed challenger Hannah Sabio-Howell while Washington Bikes endorsed incumbent Jamie Pedersen. Sabio-Howell memorably launched her campaign with a bicycle-themed video in which she rode around town saying, On your left," as she outlined her lefty priorities. Pedersen recently released a campaign mailer featuring him on a bike, as well, prompting us to ask, Who wore it best?" I asked Washington Bikes Deputy Director Vicky Clarke about their endorsement of Pedersen over a candidate who had centered bicycling in her campaign, and Clarke said, He is one of the people we work with to get our priorities passed." She also gave him credit for work to pass the Move Ahead Washington funding package that included a lot of biking and safe streets money and said he fought to protect the biking and walking elements in the Roanoke Lid section of the 520 Bridge project when they were on the chopping block. It's perhaps an echo of the organization's endorsement of Bruce Harrell in the most recent Seattle mayoral election in that WA Bikes is very likely to endorse an incumbent they have successfully worked with to get their priorities passed.
