Hideo Kojima unveils a Death Stranding 2-themed wireless CD player — Limited edition device costs ~$160, comes with Bluetooth 5.3 & exclusive artwork
Legendary video game designer Hideo Kojima, through his studio Kojima Productions, is collaborating with Japanese audio company km5 on a wireless CD player themed after the BB Pod from Death Stranding 2. The "Instant Disc Audio Cp1 DEATH STRANDING 2 Model," as it's called, doesn't have a speaker, is priced at 25,300 Yen (roughly $160), and is available through both in-person and online stores.
The limited-time device is a reskin of km5's existing CP1 CD player, but upgrades the Bluetooth 5.0 on that model to Bluetooth 5.3 on this. You get a vibrant translucent orange design that proudly displays the spinning CD for whatever you're playing. There's a slot behind the front lid where you can also put a lyric sheet or one of the two exclusive Death Stranding 2 postcards that are included in the box.
The back is opaque and features screw holes to mount or hang the player on a wall, so it acts as a standalone decorative piece even when there's no music playing. There's a 1,800mAh battery inside that's supposed to last 7-8 hours on a single charge, after which it can be juiced up through the USB-C port on the side. The front lip of the player has buttons for all basic controls, plus even a headphone jack for wired play.
The player as a whole is supposed to resemble a BB Pod and features caution marks added as accents throughout, and even the packaging is customized to fully express the world of the game. There's an LED grid in the corner that km5 calls an "LED Nixie Tube" - it shows the track number and acts as a playback status indicator. It accepts 12cm and 8cm discs, weighs 300g itself, and measures out to 160mmx140mmx26mm, so it's not exactly pocketable.
The Instant Disc Audio Cp1 DEATH STRANDING 2 Model came out yesterday, on August 1, and can be purchased on km5's online store or you can walk into the Parco Games store in Shibuya Parco, which is a mall in the Shibuya region of Tokyo. Considering it's a limited-edition collector's item, and the fact that the CP1 is already a well-reviewed CD player, this thing will probably sell out fast, but it's in stock as of this writing.
