Commanders moving Brandon Coleman back to LT after Laremy Tunsil injury

Only 72 hours after celebrating the signing of veteran receiver Stefon Diggs, the Washington Commanders lost five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps, an injury that will keep him out for a good portion of the season, if not its entirety.

Replacing a player of that caliber is a tall task, especially this late in the offseason. Washington may add to its offensive line - for depth, if not more - but for now, the plan is to turn to Brandon Coleman at left tackle, according to a team source who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Coleman, a former third-round pick out of TCU, is capable of playing all five spots on the line and started at left tackle for most of the 2024 season, when Washington reached the NFC Championship Game after going 12-5 in the regular season.

Coleman spent much of this offseason training with Tunsil at University of Alabama, where he was immersed in Tunsil's intense pre-camp regimen and worked with Tunsil's personal strength and conditioning coach, nutritionist, chef and offensive line specialist.

Moving Coleman back to left tackle allows Washington to keep Paul at left guard and Josh Conerly Jr. at right tackle, where he started last season as a rookie after playing on the left side at University of Oregon.

From Last Man Standig:

Nobody expects Coleman to perform at Tunsil's high-end level, but there are reasons to think he can be effective on the outside. Having a replacement with Coleman's upside is a relative luxury in an era where every team desperately searches for quality starting linemen.

Having Coleman and Paul start would thin out the offensive line depth.

Swing tackle Andrew Wylie is the likely primary backup at both tackle spots, though his playing experience is largely on the right side.

From Sports Illustrated:

The ripples of Laremy Tunsil's injury will be felt until he returns, but the team is at least positioned to reshuffle what they already have. Now, we all will be waiting to see Coleman take the first-team left tackle reps when Washington returns to practice and what the corresponding first-team alignment looks like at left guard.

Coleman has made 20 starts across the regular season and playoffs, with 18 of them coming at left tackle. According to Pro Football Focus, he played 390 total snaps in 2025, allowed 11 pressures and only one QB hit, gave up zero sacks, and earned a 64.6 overall grade.

He basically revamped my whole approach to how I treat camp and the season. There's a lot of stuff that I took from him, from his nutritionist to his strength guy, working with a chef, just taking care of my body a lot better. My prep for practice is a lot different. Seeing how a guy like that prepares, how he treats his body, what he does in his off time and how he recovers - that's the type of stuff that you can't get anywhere. There's only one Laremy Tunsil, in my opinion. The best tackle in the league.

Diggs in, Tunsil out; how do expectations change?

Losing Tunsil is undoubtedly a downgrade. There's no way to gloss this over. But football is a team game and the Eagles won't care who lines up at left tackle come September 13th.

Keep this in mind too: David Blough's offense will look much different than Kliff Kingsbury's scheme did. Daniels will not line up in the shotgun on nearly every snap. There will be more misdirection, there will be more play action, and there will likely be a better run game. All of those things will help the offensive line, with or without Tunsil. And don't forget the Commanders did just sign Stef Diggs.

It's not good news. Losing Tunsil is bad news. But the season ain't over yet either. It hasn't even begun.

Brandon Coleman trained with Laremy Tunsil in Alabama this offseason.

Coleman told me earlier this week that experience "basically revamped my whole approach to how I treat camp and the season." (Full quote below)

111th overall Brandon Coleman. Interesting one here because I see Coleman as being a clear-cut better left tackle than guard but is without a path to play there. Leaves a little bit of a 'square peg round hole' fit for him. I remain bullish on the upside long-term. pic.twitter.com/CJB3Q81yje

One thing to keep in mind with Decker: they are quite familiar with him. He's also dealt with multiple health issues last few years: shoulder, toe, knee. They would know the toll those have taken on his game. Again: the 1st option is Coleman.

- John Keim (@john_keim) August 9, 2026

Last season, Brandon Coleman made three starts at left tackle.

Those starts were in the last three weeks of the season.

He also made two starts at left guard last year.

Just How Much Does Diggs Move the Needle for WAS?

How much does Diggs move the needle for the WAS receiving corps? A ton. Compared to the 20 teams to have played in the last 10 Super Bowls, and before the signing of Diggs, you could make a credible case for the top 3 WAS receivers to be a SB-caliber group only if you included Chig Okonkwo as #2 and Rachaad White as #3. You could not argue that the WR group alone was SB-caliber. Terry is a solid #1, but anyone else would have to had a breakthrough year for the WR corp to have been credible - something tough to count on. Now, there is no question that the wide receivers and the receivers overall are SB caliber.

You can count on both McLaurin and Diggs to get 80 catches and over 1000 yards receiving. McLaurin had 82 catches for 1096 yards in 2024, his last healthy year. His career averages (mostly with bad QBs) are 79 for 1106 yards. Diggs had 85 catches for 1013 yards last year, despite returning from ACL surgery midway through the prior year. His career averages are 99 catches for 1215 yards. I'd say 80 catches for 1000 yards from both of them is so safe a bet that it might be illegal.

Chig is about average for a receiver #3 at any position. That means that without having a breakthrough year, but rather just repeating what they've already accomplished, Washington's receiving corp is already Super Bowl caliber. Indeed, the weapons in WAS put the team near the best of the 20 teams to have played in the past 10 Super Bowls. Imagine that.

How Stefon Diggs changes everything for Jayden Daniels, Washington's offense and receiver room

Though known as an outside receiver for much of his career, Diggs spent more snaps in the slot than outside last season. Quinn repeatedly mentioned Diggs' effectiveness from the slot and his suddenness inside." Though the head coach later said Diggs wouldn't play inside exclusively, other league front-office sources told Last Man Standig that slot work would be best for the 32-year-old due to a decline in long speed. Last season with New England, Diggs played more in the slot (308) than wide (286). In 2023 with Buffalo, his last full season before 2024's ACL tear, the split favored wide 641-to-296. According to PFF, Diggs played the 10th highest percentage of snaps from the slot.

Former Giant DJ Davidson retires

The 6-foot-5, 320 pound Davidson was primarily a rotational nose tackle and special teams player for the Giants, appearing in 47 games with 4 starts in his four years as a Giant. The highlight of his career came in the Giants' game against the Seattle Seahawks in 2024, when he sacked Seahawks' QB Geno Smith twice in the Giants' 29-20 win.

Davidson signed a 1-year, $1.32 million contract with the Commanders back on April 1st, though only $20,000 of which was guaranteed. He finishes his career with 46 total tackles, 4.0 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Patriots scramble to replace turf field before Thursday's preseason opener vs. Colts

The new field is being installed this week. And the clock is ticking. The Patriots host the Colts to open the 2026 preseason on Thursday night.

What if the new field doesn't pass muster? It wouldn't be the first time a preseason game was scrapped.

Ten years ago, the Hall of Fame Game between the Colts and Packers didn't happen due to paint that had become congealed and rubberized." (The debacle, which sparked litigation from those who bought tickets and in many cases traveled to Canton, caused the NFL to move the game from after the enshrinement ceremony to before it.) Twenty-five years ago, a Ravens-Eagles game at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia was cancelled due to uneven cutouts" in the playing surface that, at the time, was used for both football and baseball.
