Sunday was a big day for a young wide receiver going into his second season in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers drafted Savion Williams in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, seeing plenty of untapped potential and athletic ability in the big wideout. However, his impact on offense was limited as a rookie, as he was buried deep on the depth chart and had a long way to go to learn how to be an NFL receiver.

The Packers' practice on Sunday showed signs of how far he has come in recent months. Williams was responsible for multiple highlight-reel plays during Sunday's closed practice, according to beat writers, as he took advantage of more reps with the starting offense. Unfortunately, those reps came as a result of knocks to two of the Packers' top three wideouts, as Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden both sat out the practice session.

Still, those injuries opened the door for Williams to make some plays, which he did. From a deep score on a go route to taking a slant to the house at the very end of practice, it was Williams' time to shine. With the injured players likely to sit out longer this week, look for Williams to get a decent amount of run in the first half of Thursday's preseason opener, and hopefully he can open some more eyes in game action against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chris Brooks and Javon Hargrave being back will help both sides of the football, but the bigger concerns surround the offense, with Jayden Reed, Matthew Golden, and Josh Whyle all sitting out on Sunday due to some injuries.

Zach Bako-Bewele (we're still getting used to the name) was finally back taking team reps for the first time in camp, but the line looked different with Jager Burton and Jacob Monk manning the guard spots. Meanwhile, Benjamin St-Juste got some reps with the top defensive unit while Keisean Nixon got dropped down to the twos.

Packers discussion in the feed

The Lions are looking at anything and anyone to try to bolster their secondary, and the former Packer is among their recent visitors. The bigger issue than cornerback, however, is that both of Detroit's starting safeties (Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph) are on the PUP list.
