Andy Reid talks injuries, Bieniemy’s return after Monday’s Chiefs practice
After a day of rest for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the full team was back on the fields at Missouri Western State in St. Joe for the 11th practice of this year's training camp.
It was another mild day compared to the typical August mornings in Missouri. Head coach Andy Reid stepped up to the podium to recap the day before going over important updates pertaining to the Chiefs.
A lot of red-zone work today, short field," Reid shared. Things are a little faster in that area, and I thought the guys competed against each other... we worked a lot of third downs in the red zone, which will help us down the road, too."
Injury reportRight guard Trey Smith
The starting offensive lineman missed his third consecutive practice due to a hip injury that caused him to see a specialist. He could be seen off to the side on Monday.
Trey didn't practice, but improving," Reid said. When asked if it was a short-term injury for Smith, Reid put it bluntly to an old friend of the site and Kansas City Star beat writer Pete Sweeney.
Yes," Reid quickly said.
Others who didn't practice
- Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (Knee)
- Linebacker Drue Tranquill (Back spasm)
They're all improving as we go," Reid said of the players unable to participate in Monday's practice.
Returning to the field on Monday in a limited fashion
- Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa (Groin)
- Defensive end Ashton Gillotte (Hamstring)
- Wide receiver Xavier Worthy (Shoulder)
Increased participation in practice on Monday
- Wide receiver Cyrus Allen (Shin bruise)
- Wide receiver Rashee Rice (Knee)
- Cornerback Mansoor Delane (Shoulder)
Cyrus got some good work in today," Reid said. Bassa is back out there and did good. Delane did up through seven-on-seven, did a nice job with that with the pads on. Rice did most of the practice."
The return of Eric BieniemyTo the surprise of media and fans, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy walked down the hill on Monday morning to attend his first full-team practice of camp since leaving to care for his wife, Mia, after she was hospitalized due to a gunshot wound.
Reid said it was good to have his long-time assistant coach back on the field, for many different reasons.
He's back in the fold, and I don't think he missed a step," Reid said. He was out there getting after it, and that's a positive for the offensive side."
I talked to him several times a day, so I knew he was coming back if everything worked out the way it had been," Reid revealed.
The primary thing is that Mia's stable and in good hands; she's doing well, so that was the primary thing," Reid emphasized. That's where we stand with it."

Early and often during Monday's practice, Bieniemy could be heard barking at his unit and doing it with expletives. As Reid said, he didn't miss a step, and that instantly raised the intensity level of practice, anecdotally.
It was great back to have him back out there, everybody was glad to see him," Reid reiterated. I think once you start going, then you're going; it's a little bit like a game. Once you're in the game, you're in the game. He always brings great energy."
The Chiefs, and Bieniemy, will be back at it on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m.
