What can the Commanders expect to get from Brandon Coleman?

[I]t's easy to forget that Coleman actually filled in for Tunsil a few times down the stretch last year and held up relatively well.

In the run game, I think Coleman will be absolutely fine. He showed he was a strong run blocker when he started at left tackle in 2024 and even when he struggled at guard last year, he was still good in the run game. The Commanders are expected to become more of an outside zone run team this year and Coleman has the athleticism to play that scheme to a high level.

A lot of lineman struggle to make blocks in space because linebackers and defensive backs are more agile than them and can avoid the block, but Coleman uses his momentum and runs over [defensive players], bulldozing [them] to the ground. It shows off incredibly range and athleticism in the run game, which should be a strength for Coleman even as the starting left tackle.

But Coleman's issues as a rookie left tackle weren't in the run game. His pass protection was inconsistent, often flashing some nice moves but frequently mixed in some poor reps too. Let's start with the positives first. In 2024, he took on a variety of good pass rushers and had some nice reps against all of them. He was particularly efficient with a hand flash technique that got the better of both Brian Burns and Trey Hendrickson, two of the better pass rushers in the NFL.

With star LT Laremy Tunsil injured, the Commanders are likely to turn to Brandon Coleman as his replacement. But what can the Commanders expect to get out of Coleman and how can they help him? I took a closer look: https://t.co/e1cdYdjZnppic.twitter.com/aoylwFF1TT

Commanders confident Coleman can move back to tackle after excellent' offseason

Coleman was the Commanders' original planfor the position. There was some ambiguity among scouts on his role as an NFL player, but general manager Adam Peters andQuinn felt like he could be a quality tacklebecause of his size (6-foot-4 , 313 pounds),nearly 35-incharmsandsmooth footwork.Although he missed some time in training camp, he ended up winning the joband received the seventh-best offensive grade among his fellow rookie offensive tackles from Pro Football Focus.

Theadditions of Tunsil at left tackleandConerly at right duringthe2025 offseasonforced Colemanto move to guard, wheretheCommanders felt he could still contributebecause of hisphysicalityintherunning game. Coleman...did start the last three games at left tackle and allowed just two pressures on 87 pass blocking snaps.

The transition back to tackle, Coleman said, is kinda like riding a bike." he looked natural working at the position during Monday's practice. We know that he's ready for it," Quinn said. He's put in an excellent offseason."

The transition from tackle to guard and back has not been a difficult one for Coleman. He tried to stay prepared for any possibility, even taking reps at center, because you never know what happens.

My feet are good," Coleman said with a smile, so being able to dance with those guys, I'm able to keep up. And now that I'm getting my hands under control in terms of knowing where to punch, knowing what I wanna do, that stuff just helps out my feet even more."

Tunsil's mentoring helped prepare Brandon Coleman to take his place

Coleman said moving back to tackle is like riding a bike" and hasn't been a difficult transition because of his experience at the position. The more impactful change has come from his work away from the field.

He spent much of the offseason in Tuscaloosa, Ala., training alongside Tunsil, who has become a mentor to Coleman and Conerly and invited both down to take part in his offseason training regimen.

For several weeks, the three were immersed in Tunsil's preseason boot camp, which includes on-field work with Tunsil's personal offensive line coach, Mike Wahle; strength and conditioning work with his longtime strength coach, Dominic Studzinski; nutritional expertise from dietician Jacob Mertens; and customized meals courtesy of Tunsil's personal chef, Ronald Shaw.

For Coleman, the work was about both prepping for the season and learning what it takes to be a top offensive lineman. The Commanders replaced him at left guard last season in part because of nagging injuries that, Coleman believes, could have been prevented with better habits.

There's priorities that I didn't do the first couple years that I just had to reflect on and kind of be accountable on," he said. I changed that last year, but then even more this year. That's why I went with Laremy for that month, and dragged my wife out there to Alabama, the middle of nowhere. But she understood. It's just really seeing how one of the greatest tackles to ever do it does it. Like, how do I need to live to give myself a chance to be like that guy?"

Coleman said he's already incorporated some of Tunsil's regimen into his own. He now uses Mertens regularly for nutritional guidance. He also hired a local chef to prepare meals, has used the coaching points and techniques Wahle taught him over the summer and started using some of the recovery modalities that helped him in Alabama.

The Good and Not So Good From Commanders' Ninth Training Camp Practice

Brandon Coleman responded well in his first day replacing Laremy Tunsil, while Jayden Daniels stayed sharp and Washington's kicking competition took a major step backward

It is important to remember that while he is not Tunsil, Washington drafted Coleman to play tackle, and he started there for 12 games during his rookie season before eventually moving inside last year. Coleman's day was highlighted by holding his own on one rush against Odafe Oweh, carrying him out of the play rather than allowing him to turn the corner. No one is expecting Coleman to miraculously become Tunsil, but the team is desperate for him to be competent enough to secure the spot. Andrew Wylie also received work at left tackle, giving Washington another option behind Coleman, but it's important to remember that Wylie has only played a handful of snaps at the position in live game action.

One name that is not going away on defense is Joshua Josephs, who was able to get his hands on Marcus Mariota for a sack during Monday's practice. Josephs has repeatedly shown up in padded practices and has me legitimately ready to watch him closely once preseason starts.

The proverbial bottom fell out of the kicking competition Monday as Jake Moody went 2-for-6, missing four straight field goals from 44, 49, 51 and 55 yards, while Drew Stevens did not fare much better, going 3-for-6, missing from 39, 51 and 55. Moody has hit a really bad spot now with 11 misses over the last four practices, after starting camp matching Stevens, kick-for-kick. Moody was not alone in having a bad day, as Stevens also posted his worst day of camp, and it was a moment he was not able to capitalize on Moody's collapse. Moving forward, Stevens still has the advantage based on the larger body of work, but his first truly bad day keeps this from becoming a settled competition before the joint practice and preseason opener.

Washington's offense has now committed six pre-snap penalties over the last two practices, with the latest coming on third down during Monday's two-minute drill. The reason something like this matters? A third-down penalty during a two-minute situation is exactly the type of procedural mistake that can sabotage an otherwise successful drive.

Commanders Training Camp: Monday, Aug. 10

Washington Commanders cornerback Trey Amos will miss the next day or two" after injuring his ankle during practice Saturday.

We'll see where he's at in the next day or so," coach Dan Quinn said.

Amos had just returned to practice Friday after opening on the physically unable to perform list. He suffered a fractured fibula in Week 10 last season but was dealing with a soft-tissue injury prior to camp.

Commanders training camp: 11 pressing questions from Washington fans

Hey, Nicki! Last year, you were one of the few who reported something felt off with training camp. Excluding the Terry holdout, does training camp this year feel any different when compared to last?

It does feel a bit different. The intensity of the workouts is different. There's a clear sense of urgency that was lacking last year. Before last week, the one area that still concerned me, however, was the receiving corps. That was a group that was especially worrisome last year because we could see firsthand how its limitations affected the offense. Daniels struggled to get much of anything going during camp and the preseason. And given the extended absences of Noah Brown and McLaurin, you had to think about a potentially higher risk of injury for them when the season started. You could certainly hope that they wouldn't get hurt, but you had to consider it. And sure enough.

So, seeing the receiving corps this year, prior to the Stefon Diggs deal, I had similar concerns. What if Terry got hurt? Is this group enough without him? Is this group enough even with Terry? I didn't think it was, and clearly the team didn't think so either. Adding Diggs is significant - and necessary.

What can we expect from the running backs room? Seems like at least three players (Rachaad White, Jeremy McNichols, Jerome Ford) with the same playing style will be fighting for those third downs/passing plays ... any favorites?

I was skeptical of this group at first, but I actually really like them. I like the versatility of the room now, with the explosiveness of Bill - Jacory Croskey-Merritt - and White's pass catching. It's obviously still early, but my top three today would be Bill, White and the rookie, Kaytron Allen. (I can't bring myself to call anyone Fatman." Sorry, Kaytron.) Allen may be raw, but he has the natural instincts of a back - the vision, the decisiveness, the burst - that can't always be taught. And I'm not sure he'd clear waivers if they cut him. The fourth guy on my list, as of now, would be McNichols. He's proved over the last couple of years that he can step in and be that third-down back and get some chunk plays.

Who's a less prominent player who's been looking good in training camp?

Colson Yankoff, the third-year undrafted tight end. He's been primarily a special-teamer here, but I remember Zach Ertz saying last year that Yankoff was the most athletic guy on the field. We've seen that more and more with some of his acrobatic catches and his speed.

The Washington Commanders are adding another defensive lineman to bolster depth

Veteran defensive tackle Byron Cowart is expected to sign with the Commanders. The news broke shortly after the veteran was among eight defensive free agents to work out for the team, potentially giving the trenches additional depth ahead of preseason.

Cowart, 30, also becomes the fifth former University of Maryland player on Washington's roster alongside wide receiver Stefon Diggs, tight end Chig Okonkwo and safeties Qwuantrezz Knight and Nick Cross. Cowart also played with both Knight and Okonkwo during his time in College Park.

Eagles training camp injury updates

The Eagles are in their second week of training camp and the injuries are starting to stack up. The team announced earlier in the day that RB Elijah Mitchell was placed on IR, ending his 2026 season, and they have a growing list of players who are missing practice. Perhaps most concerning is that five players are dealing with hamstring injuries, three of which are wide receivers.

Alec Pierce had a second PRP injection to speed up healing in ankle

Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce has not seen the practice field in 2026.

He underwent what the Colts originally called a clean-up" surgery on his left ankle in late March. Pierce had hoped to avoid surgery by taking a platelet-rich plasma injection after the 2025 season.

He was given a 4-6-month recovery timeline, putting the start of the season in doubt.

NFL Reacts: Balancing play time in the preseason

It is officially injury season in the NFL. Just as fans around the league get their first glimpse of the new team, the players who make up that team start to fall by the wayside. There is no silver bullet solution to keeping players healthy and on the field, for the most part it really just comes down to luck. But that doesn't make it feel any better.

The one place that organizations and coaching staffs do have some control is over the preseason playing time. It's been a constant evolution and a good amount of contradiction. As the league adds another preseason game, starters see less and less of the field during those games.

This offseason has already seen an ugly list of players going down with major injuries, costing them weeks or even the full season. Rookies, key free agent additions, veterans; no one is immune. All of this has happened before even the first preseason game of the season. With the Hall of Fame Game looming, coaches are once again being forced to handle the question of protecting key players vs. getting up to game speed.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution, obviously. Some players will need more in-game action than others. But overall, fans would rather lean toward playing key players to make sure they are ready than being cautious.

fee8b8d622c6442479a9b8c363e767ea

Partially explaining this is the fact that players who aren't fully stretched out and prepared after the preseason are more likely to get hurt once the games count. But the more cynical take would be owners are reliant on important players taking the field in the preseason, as those games are packaged and sold like everything else.

As the season nears, the only thing fans can really hope for is no injury changes the eventual outcome for a team.

Teddy Bridgewater

This time it's official .

It's so crazy 10 years ago around this time, I suffered one of the most gruesome knee injuries the game itself, it's players and some doctors had ever seen. Everything football related since 2016 had been fueled by the experts" predicting that I would never play football again. We really showed them by playing 10 more seasons! However, this wheel of mine can no longer deal with something so simple as standing around on the turf field. This thing just doesn't recover the same way it did years ago so I rather officially hang it up. It's finally run its course and when the body speaks to me, I have to listen so that I can be in one piece and available for my children as they grow up. The game of football was beyond great to me and owes me nothing at all. I really did things my way Lol.

Just like one part of my career was fueled by a series of events, this next chapter of my life will be fueled with an abundance of love by this sweet little angel of ours that's coming in a couple of weeks #TAB.
