Gemini's auto-browse in Chrome is finally here for Android to make the mundane a breeze

AI assistance has been a major trend for Google, especially for phones. This week, Google will continue that trend with a Gemini in Chrome update for Android.

This afternoon (Aug 18), Google announced that Gemini is now available in Chrome for all U.S. Android users. Two major features are rolling out in light of this update. All users can lean on Gemini to summarize and answer questions about webpages. Google states its AI can quickly summarize the content in longer articles, and simply tapping its icon in Chrome brings a Q&A experience akin to its app.

On the other hand, Google says users can connect their favorite apps, such as Calendar and Keep, with Gemini in Chrome. This will likely help users save content or important dates "without switching between tabs." Image generation arrives, too, which means Gemini's Nano Banana is available.

While the bulk of users will receive this update, Google highlights a little more for subscribed AI Pro and AI Ultra consumers.

In the U.S., AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can access auto-browse with Gemini in Chrome. The post states this feature aims to make "tedious everyday tasks" easy to manage. Users on a webpage can tell Gemini to order an item or book a venue/event. Google states it's continued to roll out safeguards for its AI, especially now that it's arriving fully in Chrome.

Google said this was its plan during The Android Show: !/O Edition 2026 in May. What users on Android are receiving is Gemini 3.1, and you'll find its icon in the toolbar for easy access. The above examples provided by Google highlight Gemini's auto-browse helping a user find an item for their pet on Chewy. Users must provide a prompt (task) for Gemini to complete, and it will detail its "plan."

This is for confirmation reasons, if we're being honest. Users can review this to make sure Gemini understands their prompt, then hit "start task." Gemini will hop across Chewy, locating the item you desire, then adding it to your cart. In Google's example, Gemini finds a bowl that needs to be customized, and it waits for the user to fill this out before continuing.

The other side of Gemini arriving in Chrome is Personal Intelligence. This makes the AI more personal, as it tunes its responses to fit your hobbies and preferences.

Not a bad update. I knew this was coming since The Android Show, but to see it is another thing. The majority of people send the majority of their time on their phone, anyway. Bringing Gemini into the mix for mundane things has never screamed "bad idea" to me. The best thing is that I can see what it's doing at all times and step in if I need to. This is AI we're talking about. It's not going to be perfect, so our watchful eye is always required.
