Las Vegas Raiders No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza will likely get his second crack at NFL competition on Thursday, Aug. 20. The Raiders will take on the Houston Texans in both teams' second - and penultimate - preseason game. Both teams are still seeking their first exhibition win.
Mendoza had a solid preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 - even if he felt otherwise. His final line was 10-for-16 (62.5% completion rate) with 97 passing yards and a throwing touchdown. On the game's film, he proved he was able to adjust well to the heightened game speed of the NFL after a four-year college career. Mendoza made some nice throws with good ball placement, and he managed to read through his progressions quickly and with generally good decision-making.
Despite his impressive box score numbers, he said after the game he was disappointed with his first outing.
"Unfortunately, I let my teammates down today," Mendoza said. "But it's a growing experience ... and it showed me I need to grow a lot."
Mendoza will have another chance to make his teammates proud on Aug. 20 in Houston. The Texans boasted one of the league's best defenses last year, though their starters are unlikely to play the entire preseason game.
