It's a lot more fun to put Monday's Falcons Opening Drive together after the Falcons absolutely dominated the Colts in preseason action on Saturday afternoon.

Below, I've got some thoughts on Michael Penix Jr. being medically cleared and what it means for this quarterback depth chart. We've also got some fun looks back at Saturday's win over the Colts and the state of the roster, a fantastic article on reasons Falcons fans should be excited about this season despite the quarterback depth chart situation, and don't miss The Falcoholic's Question of the Day: Should Jack Strand be this team's QB3?

Falcons Opening Drive: What does a healthy Michael Penix Jr. mean for Atlanta?

Every single day Kevin Stefanski takes the podium to speak to the media, somebody asks about the timetable for Michael Penix Jr. to be medically cleared. Now we have the answer to that question. But what we don't know is whether his change in status means there's a possibility for Penix to start Week 1.

During joint practices with the Colts, Penix participated in 1-on-1s and 7-on-7s, and he mentioned to the media after Thursday's practice that while he feels healthy, his doctor - and Penix - also had to think about the possibility that he's not healthy enough to withstand full contact.

If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I could get away, but it's just right now, if I don't get away, that's what we think about," Penix said during joint practices against the Colts last week.

Penix has also spoken several times this offseason and preseason about the mental hurdle associated with his recovery. He's cleared to participate physically, but has he been able to fully overcome that mental hurdle? And if not, does that create additional injury risk? Is it worth taking the chance? Is his head in the right place?

And then there's the matter of Penix's injury history, and the injury history of the other potential QB1 on the roster, Tua Tagovailoa.

Monday kicks off a fundamentally important week of practice for all four quarterbacks on the roster. Tua Tagovailoa will want to prove he should be the starter regardless of Michael Penix Jr's status. Penix will want to prove the mental reps he's taken in addition to his limited physical participation in practice have actually prepared him to start Week 1. For Cooper Rush and Jack Strand, they're each hoping to snag that QB3 spot.

Yes, Tagovailoa and Penix are both healthy now, but because of their injury histories, making sure the QB3 is adequate is fundamentally important. I can understand the thought process behind keeping Rush and his experience around, but Strand has truly been exciting to watch this preseason, and his potential is massive.

Kevin Stefanski will speak to the media around noon tomorrow, practice will be at 2:35 p.m., and select players (I won't know who until tomorrow) will speak to the media after practice. I typically can't be in Flowery Branch on Monday, but I want to see how they manage getting Penix up to full speed, and I know I'm not the only one who wants to know how he's looking, so I'll be there to keep y'all posted. All of my reporting from tomorrow's practice will be in the Feed, and I'll have a practice report on The Falcoholic afterward.

Now let's move on to everything you need to read, watch, or listen to about the Atlanta Falcons today.

  • That Falcons win over the Colts was extremely fun. Relive it here.
  • Dave Choate covers the snap counts from Saturday's preseason win, right here on The Falcoh0lic.
  • I am 100% in favor of taking cool-ass penalties on purpose in the preseason, like the excessive celebration flag against the Colts on Saturday.

On Friday, I asked everyone to write a mission statement for the 2026 Falcons. There were a ton of fun ones - I was especially partial to the thread that perfectly mimicked the cadence and tone of a certain politician's Truth Social posts. Spot on, and legitimately hilarious! But TrenchesPlease had my absolute favorite:

First of all, it's an iconic line from an iconic Falcon. Secondly, I couldn't agree more about the reasoning behind it. And I do think seeing the Falcons bounce back so dramatically on Day 2 of joint practices against the Colts and in Week 2 of the preseason after floundering Week 1 - these things should be indicative of better coaching and a better-run organization.

I hope so, anyway.

The Falcoholic Question of the Day:

Should Jack Strand be the Atlanta Falcons' QB3, or should it be Cooper Rush or someone else entirely - a trade, a waiver wire pickup, Matt Ryan comes out of retirement? Why do you think so? Let us know in the comments!
