49ers reportedly signing veteran WR Brandin Cooks to practice squad
The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly signing veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks to their practice squad, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Cooks is expected to get up to speed for games and then be activated to the main roster. This will be the 13th year of Cooks' career, and he joins a 49ers roster riddled with injuries at the position.
San Francisco is without rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling, who is on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. At the end of the 49ers' Week 2 blowout of the Miami Dolphins, it was reported that Mike Evans was getting extra rest and being held out, along with fellow veterans Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle.
Unlike McCaffrey and Kittle, though, Evans was later listed as questionable to return to the game due to a hip injury. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Evans' injury will have to be monitored throughout the week.
Also in the win, Demarcus Robinson sustained a high-ankle sprain that will keep him out of action for three to six weeks.
Cooks will try to learn the new playbook and team quickly, but it is unclear whether he will pick up enough to be elevated and active for the team's Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
If the wide receiver is indeed elevated and activated, it will be his 13th season in the league. Cooks began his career with the Saints and was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by New Orleans.
He has since had stints with the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, and Bills.
Over his 12-year career so far, Cooks has played in 173 games. In that span, the wideout has totaled 9,811 yards with 60 touchdowns. If he tallies 189 yards, he will be the 58th player in NFL history to have at least 10,000 receiving yards in his career.
