Ben Johnson: At this point, we're unsure of who will start at QB on Monday night

With Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent each dealing with an injury, Case Keenum is in line to start for the Bears at quarterback in Week 3.

But given the nature of the injuries to QB1 and QB2, it's currently unclear who will be behind center on Monday night when Chicago hosts Philadelphia.

We've got three guys that can play ball in this league, that have won games in this league," head coach Ben Johnson said in his Wednesday press conference, complimenting G.M. Ryan Poles for the way he constructed the position group. And so, we're at a point right now [where we're] not sure who the starter's going to be on Monday night. We'll let this thing play out and we'll go from there.

But here's what we know - we know Case is the one that's practicing today. So we'll figure it out as we go. Our guys will rally around. These guys are all capable. And they know that - they've seen them in action here over the last year and a half. So, we feel really good about that situation."

With Williams suffering a hamstring injury on Sunday, Bagent was in line to start the upcoming game until he was placed in the concussion protocol on Tuesday.

I got a text yesterday morning that he was going to get evaluated for concussion symptoms and he's been placed in the protocol," Johnson said. They'll let me know when he's available again. That's all I really care about."

While Williams is not slated to practice on Wednesday, there could be an outside shot of him getting back in time for Monday night. Johnson mentioned Williams was around for the walk-through, though that doesn't necessarily mean much for his level of participation. Bagent is not in the building as he goes through the early portion of the protocol.

I sent those guys the plan that we had as of last night. We're working through it," Johnson said. It's good - Caleb's out there in walk-through, he's actively involved as well. So, it's been good dialogue with all those guys, just making sure we're accounting for any issues that could come up in this game, and we have sound ball plays so we can go out there and play fast."

Johnson noted the team does not plan to add a quarterback for this week.

Keenum has not played in a regular-season game since 2023, but Johnson noted that he feels comfortable with the veteran quarterback from their shared time on the practice field and in preseason games.

He's at the point of his career where he's like another coach in a lot of ways," Johnson said of Keenum. He's seen a ton. He knows what good football looks like. He knows what a healthy locker room looks like, and he's a key part of what we do. So, he and I talk on a regular basis from a quarterback meeting perspective to big lens with the team - he's a big part of this.

So, I'm not concerned at all about calling the game for him or how he can potentially play on Monday night."

Playing on Monday, the Bears will not issue their first injury report of the week until Thursday.
