Who will Chicago Bears start at quarterback? What Ben Johnson said
CHICAGO - If Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson knows who his quarterback will be this weekend, he's not saying.
Johnson said Wednesday, Sept. 30, that Caleb Williams, Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent would "work through the week," and the Bears will go with whoever gives them the best chance against the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 4. Asked if he really hasn't made a decision yet or he just doesn't want to reveal it, Johnson smiled.
"I don't know," he said. "We'll know on Sunday who's playing."
Johnson also said Williams, who is week to week with a hamstring injury, is "getting better every day" but would not participate in the team's walk-through Wednesday.
The Bears were down to Keenum, their third quarterback, against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, Sept. 28, because of Williams' injury and Bagent spending most of the previous week in the concussion protocol. Though it was Keenum's first start since 2023, the 38-year-old was masterful, accounting for three touchdowns - two passing, one rushing - and outplayed Jalen Hurts in Chicago's 27-7 win.
Though Johnson said after the game there was a reason Bagent was ahead of Keenum coming out of training camp, Keenum's performance against the Eagles could shuffle their standings.
"We're looking at everything. He played really well the other night and, sure, that plays a part in the evaluation," Johnson said.
No matter who winds up under center, Johnson said the Bears will be in good hands.
"I feel really good about all three quarterbacks in that room, and I know all three of them can win ballgames for us," Johnson said.
