What happened on Giants running back Cam Skattebo's fumble with 1:55 left in overtime of Sunday's 27-27 tie with the Washington Commanders?

New York's first play out of the two-minute warning was a first-and-10 from the Commanders' 24-yard line that went for no gain up the middle and turned into a win-preventing fumble.

Jayden Daniels' own mistake, going down at the Giants' 24-yard line as time expired, outdid Skattebo's gaffe but did not negate what happened.

"The idea was to run it twice and then run it down, get as close as we could, protect the football -- which we talked about, numerous times -- and then run it down, take the knee so in case he doesn't make the field goal there's no time for them to come back and kick a field goal," said New York coach John Harbaugh. "That's a strategy, that's a strategy we decided on early in training camp and that's a strategy we'll probably do next time, too. We'll see. It depends on how close we are.

"But Skatt knows he's got -- Skatt played a hell of game. But he's going to have to learn from that. And I think everybody's got to learn from that. What type of running is called for in that situation. We practice that very situation plenty of times. I expect him to be accountable -- I know he will or he was -- and he'll do better next time. So, we've got to learn from that."

Before Skattebo's fumble, his two runs for 14 yards pushed the Giants (3-1-1) from the Commanders' 38-yard line down into field goal range for the potential win.

"I'm a back that tries to get more yards," said Skattebo, who rushed 13 times for 59 yards on a rain-soaked afternoon outside the nation's capitol. "And I think in that situation I kind of got to ... just get what I can and get down because we're in good position to win that game.

"And right there at the end I was being me, trying to get more yards and made a mistake."

Skattebo has fumbled four times in five games this season. Unlike the previous three, which were recovered by the Giants, this was his first time getting burned.

"At the end of the day, take care of the ball," he said. "Everybody in the locker room trusts me. All 52 other guys and all the coaching staff trusts me to have the ball there at the end, and I've got to step up and make a play. Simple as that. I've got to hold onto the ball and make sure that these guys know that when my name is called that we're going to be OK."

Returning from Washington (1-3-1) to MetLife Stadium for next Sunday's 1 p.m. game against the New Orleans Saints, who are 1-4 after Sunday's 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Skattebo is turning the page.

"It sucks," Skattebo said. "I mean, there's 11 guys on the other team just screaming at you, telling you you messed up, it's your fault, you sold the game -- everything. ... You get that laying on the floor after you do it.

"So, it sucks. But like I said earlier, the great players that become great in this league move past those things and continue to work and get back on the field and make plays when their name's called."
