Single-ignition barrages, or "cakes" as the pros call them, are increasingly a favoured option for amateur firework displays. Consisting of zig-zagging rows of explosives that ignite consecutively, they fire an unpredictable collection of bangs, candles and stars into the sky, compounding their excitement with the element of surprise.
