Braden Holtby got a well-deserved night off Thursday, but it didn't go as planned for the Washington Capitals.

Philipp Grubauer was inches away from an incredible stick save on Eric Staal, with a video review ruling the puck crossed the line, and the Carolina Hurricanes went on to win 4-2.

What a save by Grubauer - but it's (just) a goal. 2-1, Hurricanes. #NHL.

With the loss, the Washington Capitals waved their nine-game winning streak goodbye. Still, their double-digit cushion in points over the rest of the Eastern Conference remains intact.

Phillip Di Giuseppe and Jeff Skinner also beat Grubauer, while Andrej Nestrasil sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute. Eddie Lack impressed with 30 saves to improve to 4-0-1 in his last five starts.

Capitals stars Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin scored their 11th and 21st goals of the season, respectively.

Holtby will likely return between the pipes against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, when he'll look to avoid his first regulation loss since Nov. 10.
