Wild, Blue Jackets tie NHL record with goals 2 seconds apart

Tuesday's game between the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets was seemingly wrapped up after Zach Parise's hat trick-clinching empty-netter gave the Wild a 3-1 lead, but the two teams put on an entertaining display in the final seconds.

Nick Foligno scored to put his team within one goal with 16 seconds remaining, and the Blue Jackets opted to keep the net empty for the impending faceoff. The result: Mikael Granlund slapping the puck into the open goal from center ice with just 1.7 seconds coming off the clock.

Since fractions of seconds aren't kept in the NHL's record book, as Star Tribune writer Michael Russo notes, the Wild and Blue Jackets tied the NHL record for fastest goals by two teams, rather than breaking it.
