Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced Monday that forward Evgeni Malkin will be out "for this week" and work with the team's training and medical staff.

"Right now, Geno is in the process of rehabbing," said Sullivan, who added that Malkin's lower-body injury is not long term, but also not day-to-day. The 29-year-old has already missed three games with the issue.

The Penguins are scheduled to face the New York Rangers on Wednesday and the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday before getting a rare weekend off.

Malkin ranks second on the Penguins with 23 goals and 26 assists behind the red-hot Sidney Crosby.
