The NHL wants to go international.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the NHL is considering a full-fledged international calendar as a means to grow the game globally.

The proposed calendar begins in 2018 and runs through 2024, with an international event on the docket for every year except 2019.

Year Event
2018Winter Olympics
2020World Cup of Hockey
2021Ryder Cup
2022Winter Olympics
2023Ryder Cup
2024World Cup of Hockey

The Ryder Cup would be on a play on the golf event where, according to Friedman, fans would see either "Canada versus the World" or "North America versus the World." The Ryder Cup would be in place of the NHL all-star game in those seasons.

The proposal also includes two preseason games to be held in China, as well as two regular season games in Europe. The league has not held regular season games in Europe since 2011, as part of the last rendition of the NHL Premiere.
