Dolphins' Gase: 'We got a steal' in Cutler

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he acted on his intuition before coaxing Jay Cutler out of retirement earlier this month.

Cutler retired in May and accepted a broadcast position at FOX. However, Cutler's eventual foray into the television world was postponed after Dolphins incumbent starter Ryan Tannehill suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice.

Gase made a phone call to Cutler and reflected on it before the Dolphins eventually signed him to replace Tannehill.

"I don't know if I was convinced he was done," Gase said to The MMQB's Robert Klemko.

"I didn't feel like he was really looking for anything or searching for a team. It was what it was at the time."

Gase, who previously worked with Cutler as the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator in 2015, believes the Dolphins acquired a quality starter at a bargain price.

"We've got a lot of good players and a lot of guys who work extremely hard, and I wanted to make sure we had a chance to compete this year. To me, we got a steal, a guy who's a pretty good player."

Cutler is already making a strong impression on the Dolphins' players and coaching staff, with the season less than a month away.

"He came in here to be a part of it, what we've built," Gase said. "Our players do a great job of rallying. Seems like we always have something weird happen. They just don't say anything, put their head down and grind, and it's one of the things I love the most about this team."
