The Indianapolis Colts may be without quarterback Andrew Luck until at least Week 4.

The franchise quarterback has already been ruled out of Sunday's season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, but he could be out of action until October, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.

The Colts' first contest that month is Oct. 1, a Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The team has been cautious with Luck since he underwent shoulder surgery in January. While he has resumed throwing, he has yet to practice with the team. The Colts would like to see him in a practice setting before clearing him for game action, Rapoport adds.

The Seahawks' vaunted defense may not be the ideal opponent for Luck's return. If the Colts opt against playing him versus Seattle, Indianapolis faces the San Francisco 49ers the following week.

"It's going to be Scott Tolzien as their quarterback and my understanding is we're still a couple weeks away at least from seeing Andrew Luck," Rapoport said on "NFL GameDay Morning."

The Colts traded for former New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett to serve as Tolzien's backup while Luck is out.
