The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Chris Carson on injured reserve with a broken leg, a source told ESPN's Field Yates.

During an appearance on KIRO-AM, head coach Pete Carroll revealed that Carson suffered a fracture below his knee. The rookie running back sustained the injury during Sunday's 46-18 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Carson, who emerged as the Seahawks' lead back after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State, will undergo ankle surgery on Tuesday and the Seahawks believe he could return later in the season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The 23-year-old rushed for 208 yards on 49 carries in four games.

Eddie Lacy, J.D. McKissic, and Thomas Rawls will all vie for increased carries in Carson's absence.
