NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says much progress has been made after a number of meetings centered on the topic of player protests during the national anthem.

Goodell addressed the media Wednesday after a second day of league meetings and reiterated that the NFL and its teams won't force players to stand for the national anthem before games. It is, however, encouraged.

He said about six players are still involved in the protests, and he hopes to get that number "down to zero," Newsday's Bob Glauber reports.

The commissioner added that he hasn't communicated with President Donald Trump, a vocal critic of anthem protests.
