Normally genial Thomas Davis is in a foul mood.

The Carolina Panthers linebacker was fined $48,620 by the NFL for what was deemed a helmet-to-helmet hit he delivered to Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Adam Humphries last week.

Davis, a former Walter Payton Man of the Year award winner, vented his frustration with the fine on Instagram, signing off by stating "if this (hit) was illegal then it's time for me to retire."

As a 13yr vet that honestly tries to play the game of football the way it's supposed to be played! I can't imagine that this freakin' tackle would cost me $48,620! Not a single part of this play was dirty! I love playing this game but if this was illegal then it's time for me to retire! #AppealOnDeck

Davis plans to appeal the fine.
