Texans' Savage: 'You can't really replace Deshaun Watson'
Tom Savage is back under center for the Houston Texans, but the move comes under the worst possible circumstances.
Star rookie Deshaun Watson tore his ACL in a non-contact drill at Thursday's practice. With him sidelined, Savage will have to reassume a role he lost midway through the first game of the season.
It was then that Savage was replaced by Watson, and the team hasn't looked back since. But now they'll have to.
"I'm just going to state the obvious, there's things he can do that I can't do," Savage said of Watson, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Watson led the team to a 3-3 record in six starts and lumped himself into the NFL MVP and Rookie of the Year conversations.
Savage added he didn't want to regain the starting job under these circumstances, but promises to be ready to perform.
"Not too many guys get a second shot," he added.
He also had a message for Watson, whom he got to watch for the past eight weeks.
"I just told him, 'I got your back no matter what and I'm gonna do whatever I can to help out.' You can't really replace Deshaun Watson. The kid's been playing absolute lights out. But that's not my job, my job is to help this team win," he said, per Mark Berman from Fox 26 Houston.
Savage takes over a team at 3-4, and one game behind both the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South standings.
