Report: Giants expected to name James Bettcher new DC

The New York Giants' new coaching staff is taking form.

A day after naming Pat Shurmur their 18th head coach in team history, the Giants are set to make James Bettcher their new defensive coordinator, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Bettcher ran the defense for the Arizona Cardinals the past three seasons and drew offers from the Giants and Tennessee Titans.

Upon his retirement, former Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians endorsed Bettcher as his replacement. Arizona went another direction, hiring former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

The Cardinals' defense ranked sixth overall this year and in the top five the past two seasons.
