Electric Power Show Preview
The ELECTRIC POWER Conference + Exhibition for two decades has been the place for those in the power generation industry to come together for up-to-date training and continuing education-a place to gain a better understanding of regulatory and policy changes impacting the energy sector. It provides an opportunity to access the latest products and technologies, and a chance to see how power generation facilities are being made safer, more efficient, and more productive. This year's conference is March 19-22 at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. A sampling of the conference sponsors and exhibitors, and their products and services, are highlighted in this section.
ABB Launches New Energy Meter Range for 690-V MotorsABB, with a clear focus on reducing costs and improving efficiency, has introduced an energy meter range that satisfies the requirements of 690-V motors and other applications in the same voltage range. ABB's new range of EQ A44 three-phase 690-V high-functionality electricity meters deliver outstanding performance for the reliable metering of energy usage. ABB's EQ A44 552-110 or A44 553-110 meters can be easily installed without the need for additional voltage transformers, which reduces purchase and installation costs. Removing the need for voltage transformers in 690-V installations, the new single device allows for faster wiring and fewer settings. EQ A44 is available in a wide range of voltages and is suitable for use in a variety of temperatures. It can be used in three- or four-wire installations, making it easier to install new meters or retrofit older versions. Both models fit standard DIN Rail enclosures-making them compact and easy to locate-and provide easy access to energy efficiency data, which supports ISO 50001 certification. ABB, Zurich, Switzerland
Black & Veatch Helps Develop 500-MW Energy Storage FacilityBlack & Veatch has been selected to serve as owners' representative for an energy storage facility at the San Vicente Reservoir near Lakeside in San Diego County, California. The project owners, the San Diego County Water Authority and the City of San Diego, are assessing the potential to develop the 500-MW San Vicente Energy Storage Facility (SVESF) to increase the availability and efficiency of renewable energy for the region. As the owners' representative, Black & Veatch will help evaluate proposals, select the entire service team, and negotiate the project delivery agreement. The SVESF project includes the establishment of a small reservoir above the existing San Vicente Reservoir as well as a tunnel system and underground powerhouse to connect the two reservoirs. The pumped hydro energy storage solution would support power grid operations, and enable significant and sustained integration of renewable wind and solar energy into the power supply mix. During peak energy demand, water would flow downhill to turn hydroelectric turbines. During off-peak periods, including daytime when renewable energy supplies exceed demand, water would be pumped to the upper reservoir. Black & Veatch, Overland Park, Kansas
