New catch rule passes unanimously

The NFL's owners voted 32-0 to approve a new catch rule, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

The new rule will require a receiver to establish control, get two feet or another body part down, and make a football move, such as taking a third step, extending the ball, or showing the ability to make such an act. It's no longer required for a receiver to "survive the ground" with possession of the football if he hits the turf.

The rule was presented at the NFL's league meetings in Orlando this past weekend and put to a vote Tuesday.

Head of officiating Al Riveron said Monday the intention is to ensure memorable and seemingly legitimate catches - such as infamous receptions from Dez Bryant, Jesse James, and Calvin Johnson - aren't called back.

The rule needed approval from 24 of the league's 32 teams in order to pass. Many owners have vocally supported an adjustment after multiple embarrassing controversies in recent seasons.
