Equipment Showcase [April 2018]
Diesel-powered or gas-powered engines are the popular options for those wanting a generator as a prime power or standby, backup power source. A recent report from ResearchAndMarkets.com says the generator market will reach almost $21 billion in 2018, rising to more than $27 billion by 2023. Several manufacturers offer generator sets, and they vary in terms of benefits, cost, and application. A handful of manufacturers that have improved diesel and gas generator technology are featured here.
MAN Launches 26-MW Four-Stroke EngineMAN Diesel & Turbo announced the latest addition to the company's 4x line of high-performance diesel engines. The MAN 20V45/60 comes with power output of 26 MW, and the company was able to considerably reduce fuel consumption compared to its predecessor, the MAN 48/60. "[Achieving] 26 MW in output is unprecedented-this is the most powerful four-stroke engine in the market", said Wayne Jones, chief sales officer of MAN Diesel & Turbo. "The 20V45/60 expands the current performance range of MAN's 4x family of diesel engines by more than 4 MW, while offering a best-in-class fuel efficiency of more than 50%. Hence, it allows our customers to save both investment and operational costs." A two-stage turbocharger module rounds off the MAN 20V45/60's profile. The design can withstand extreme site conditions such as high ambient temperatures and high altitudes, and makes the engine an excellent solution for captive power applications in climatically-demanding locations. Caterpillar Unveils CG132B SeriesCaterpillar Energy Solutions has launched its Cat CG132B series, a new line of gas generator sets whose trend-setting components, state-of-the-art sensors, and digitized power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management) deliver maximum efficiency and availability. In natural gas operation, for example, the electrical efficiency reaches up to 43.5%. The series is well-suited to the distributed energy generation market; it can achieve up to 90% efficiency in the cogeneration of power and heat. A number of measures have been implemented to make the new series even more robust. For example, the generator is now flanged to the gas engine, and the vibration decoupling now takes place directly between the components and the base frame. Along with the new series, the company introduced its fully integrated digital power plant control system TPEM. The newly developed genset represents the dawn of a digital age on the market for distributed energy solutions. Caterpillar Energy Solutions GmbH, Mannheim, Germany

Mitsubishi's MGS Series Will Supply Power in IndonesiaMitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger Ltd. (MHIET), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., received an order for 147 units of its MGS Series gensets-the core lineup in the company's diesel power plant offerings-from PT PLN (Persero), a state-owned electricity provider in Indonesia. The gensets are to serve as stand-alone power systems, a mode of power supply especially useful in Indonesia, a country comprising thousands of islands. Plans call for the units to progressively go into service in 22 districts of Kalimantan and Sulawesi by mid-2018. The gensets on order are the MGS1500C. They provide a continuous output of 1.2 MW, and due to their high-speed operation, the engines are small in size and light in weight for units delivering output of this scope. Today's MGS gensets provide a higher generating power rating and more advanced control systems than ever before, with proven reliability based on continued research and development. Mitsubishi-brand diesel engines range in capacity from 0.5 HP to 56,400 HP, offering a series of versatile power generating systems. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Tokyo, Japan
Cummins Announces Backup Power ModelsCummins' Commercial GenSets are available in a range of sizes, with the ability to start and assume load in less than 10 seconds. They are well-suited to utility peaking plants, distributed generation facilities, peak shaving (or peak lopping), and power management at large commercial or industrial sites. The Cummins Industrial Engine, a 4-cycle industrial spark ignited engine, delivers reliable power, low emissions, and fast response to load changes. Several alternator sizes offer selectable motor-starting capability with low reactance 2/3 pitch windings, low waveform distortion with non-linear loads, fault-clearing short-circuit capability, and class-H insulation. The PowerCommand electronic control is standard equipment and provides total genset system integration, including automatic remote starting/stopping, precise voltage regulation, alarm and status message display, AmpSentry protection, output metering, auto-shutdown at fault detection, and National Fire Protection Association 110 compliance. FG Wilson Offers Customized GensetsFG Wilson has completed projects worldwide with its diesel generator sets, customized according to client's needs and requirements. Among its projects: The company put in place a 1 x XD200P2 generator set supplied by Dieselec Thistle, one of its UK dealers, to provide power for a temporary media center when two giant pandas arrived at the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. The company also provided generator sets for the 2012 London Olympic Games, including 200-kVA, 350-kVA, 635-kVA, and 730-kVA models. The company's diesel product range is available from 6.8 kVA to 2,500 kVA, and includes open and enclosed generator sets. Gas-powered generator sets produce lower emissions, less noise, and can provide lower operating costs compared to diesel-powered units. As an example, the company's PG345B3 model is a baseload unit, with a Perkins 4006-23TRS1 engine. It provides 345 kVA, operating at 50 Hz. The engine is a 6-cylinder, in-line alignment, with a 4-stroke cycle, turbocharged induction, and water-cooled. FG Wilson's range of gas generator sets includes Scania- and Perkins-powered units from 240 kVA to 1,250 kVA. FG Wilson, Belfast, Northern Ireland
