Raiders end Maurice Hurst's health-related slide in 5th round

The Oakland Raiders have selected defensive tackle Maurice Hurst out of Michigan with the 140th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft after a trade up with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts received the 159th and 185th overall picks from the Raiders for the selection.

Hurst was considered a first-round talent by some, and possibly the best interior defensive lineman in the draft, but a heart condition caused him to slide; some teams reportedly removed him completely from their board. The Michigan product was sent home from the combine due to the condition, and reportedly was later cleared to play.

Hurst is Oakland's sixth player drafted and the second defensive tackle after the club selected P.J. Hall in the second round.

Strengths

• Natural disruptor who uses leverage and motor to keep offensive linemen's hands from controlling him and makes it hard for blockers to gain good hand position.
• Uses quick first step to gain position on blockers and slides through lanes into the backfield.
• Has a high motor, keeps legs driving against run and pass, and is very willing to chase play downfield and to the perimeter.

Weaknesses

• Diagnosed with a heart condition that kept him out of the combine. Was reportedly cleared, but the extent of the issue is unclear.
• Undersized for an interior defensive tackle. Needs to keep legs driving and hands moving constantly to avoid being sucked up into blocks.
• Gets tired from constant movement and takes some plays off if blocker squares up off the snap.
