Islanders fire GM Snow, head coach Weight; Lamoriello takes over as GM

Lou Lamoriello didn't take long to shake things up with his new team.

The New York Islanders have dismissed general manager Garth Snow and head coach Doug Weight, with Lamoriello - the club's president of hockey operations - assuming the GM role, the Islanders announced Tuesday.

Snow and Weight will stay on with the organization, as both are reportedly still under contract.

Not sure why people are thrown off by line in press release that Snow and Weight will remain with the organization. I'd assume they'd both like to be paid for the years remaining on their deals - told Snow's contract ran through 2021-22.

The Islanders made the playoffs only four times in Snow's 12-year tenure, going only as far as the second round in 2016. He took over as GM in the summer of 2006 upon announcing his retirement as a player.

Weight was the Islanders' head coach for about one-and-a-half seasons, taking over for the fired Jack Capuano midway through the 2016-17 campaign. He compiled a 59-49-14 record in 122 regular-season games and took over the lead position after serving as an assistant coach under Capuano beginning in 2011-12.

Lamoriello joined the club in late May after leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom he spent three seasons. Not long after he departed, Kyle Dubas was named Toronto's GM.
