Cardinals rookie plans to pay off sister's student loans with signing bonus
Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Chase Edmonds has a plan for how to spend a good chunk of his $452,359 signing bonus after agreeing to a $3.6-million deal on May 12.
Edmonds wrote in a school assignment as a child that he wants to make it to the NFL and then pay off his sister's student loans, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. He remained committed to his goal after being chosen with the 134th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.
"My sister has some student debt so I really want to pay that off for her," Edmonds said roughly two weeks after the draft.
His sister, Morgan, fulfilled an undergrad at NC State and earned a master's in counseling at Arizona State. Edmonds' mother, Alison, told him his sister's loans total $80,000, for which she makes monthly payments of $360 to $380.
The numbers came as a surprise to Edmonds, who attended Fordham on a scholarship.
"When you're on full scholarship you don't realize these bills," he said. "These things add up. When my mom told me Morgan's debt at the time, I said, 'Wow. If I ever can make it to the NFL that's something that I would love to do, just to surprise her and pay that off for her so she can really live free and do whatever she wants with her money.'"
Morgan received texts from friends after Chase's comments, though he's yet to tell her himself. The two are both hoping to avoid a teary interaction when he does.
"I don't need a reaction from Morgan," Chase said. "It's a token of me telling her how much I love her, how much I appreciate everything that she's done in my 22 years of life."
