Julian Edelman's positive test for performance-enhancing drugs was triggered by an unrecognizable substance that scientists are still analyzing, Albert Breer of the MMQB reported.

The New England Patriots receiver is facing a four-game suspension, which he's currently appealing. Edelman said "I don't know what happened" in regards to his positive test Friday on Instagram.

Edelman was tested a couple of months ago, meaning the substance wasn't a stimulant like Adderall, noted Breer, as offseason rules have changed so that they're instead classed under the substance-abuse policy.

The 32-year-old is coming off a lost season due to a torn ACL suffered in the preseason, but he was expected to slot back into his role as Brady's go-to receiver following the trade of Brandin Cooks.
