Tiger-Cats trade Manziel to Alouettes

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have traded former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Montreal Alouettes following recent injuries to Drew Willy and Jeff Mathews, the two teams announced Sunday.

Hamilton will send Manziel along with offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice to Montreal in exchange for defensive end Jamaal Westerman, wide receiver Chris Williams, and a first-round pick in both 2020 and 2021.

Manziel has yet to step foot on a CFL field during the regular season, as the Tiger-Cats have started Jeremiah Masoli in all five games, winning two and losing three.

However, Manziel should have a much easier route to playing time in Montreal, as Mathews is set to miss four-to-six weeks with a foot injury, while Willy left Saturday's 25-8 loss to the Calgary Stampeders due to a hand ailment that required stitches. Matt Shiltz replaced Willy against Calgary, continuing a seemingly never-ending carousel under center for Montreal.

The Alouettes sit at 1-4 and own by far the worst offense in the league, putting up a paltry 13.8 points per game.

Manziel, a former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, is attempting to jump-start his career and will now reunite with Alouettes head coach Mike Sherman, who was in charge of Texas A&M during the quarterback's first year with the program.
