Panthers' Cockrell breaks leg in practice

The Carolina Panthers confirmed Monday that cornerback Ross Cockrell suffered a broken leg in practice.

The four-year veteran will undergo surgery for a fractured left tibia and fibula.

Cockrell reportedly yelled to his teammates that his left leg was broken immediately after the injury, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Teammates huddled around him and he was later carted off the field.

The Panthers signed the 26-year-old to a two-year, $6.6-million contract as a free agent this offseason.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 2014 NFL Draft, Cockrell appeared in 54 games over his first four years in the league, splitting time between the Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Giants. He started all 16 games for the Steelers in 2016.

Panthers offensive tackle Daryl Williams suffered a torn MCL in Saturday's practice.
